The Chrysler Building is one of the leading examples of Art Deco Architecture. Completed in 1930, the building is adorned with replicas of 1929 Chrysler radiator caps on the corners of the 31st floor, ornamental eagles on the 61st floor corners, and a stainless-steel clad crown replicating a sunburst. Walter Chrysler's building was the world's tallest for less than a year, but it has lived on as a work of art. Over more than six years, Jessie passionately drew and painted the Chrysler Building dozens of times. In different seasons, from Summer sun to Winter's snow. In the morning, afternoon, and evening. From her apartment (Room with a View, opposite page) and from within Gramercy Park. Impressionistically and whimsically. The best of her works are included in this book. |

Composed by complex landscapes it embeds different functions, perpetual competing domination over the territory. In this fringe the ‘ringculture’ of Neutelings arises. It was in the outskirts of the old city that the modernistic just society had emerged. The division of life as ‘living, working and recreation’ was the startingpoint of enclaved areas and a car-oriented planning. This ring sways around big boxes: the horizontal shoppingmalls, the vertical housing complexes. Functions were planned, assigned and built. Anything else was left-over, empty space that still today is not claimed for. These 20th century artifacts (the ring, the box, the empty space) will be the flexible elements transforming this fringe into a dynamic ‘ringstad’. The ring will be the structural backbone, physically structurizing the area but dynamic in functions responding to new living patterns. Simultaneous the landscape will be a characteristic structure in the transformation process, using the landscape progressively will be crucial for a livable environment, but also to emphasize identity and place-making. The dichotomy between the built and the unbuilt will dissolve. Empty spaces will become the breeding grounds for the development of ideas, introducing temporary events will activate sites currently forgotten. Scenarios of growth and shrink are composing the narrative of the dynamic Ringstad. The vitality of the Ringstad emerges over time, with the urban and natural patterns as decisive instruments. In this way the ‘ringstad’ captures the complexity of areas undergoing transformation. |

Conceived by a young urban context, it was murdered by the elevator (its birth father) in its infancy. The murderer did it over and over again, placing the carcasses on display piled up like pancakes and wrapped in shiny material, like an obsessive serial killer with a penchant for arrangement and artistic expression. Lacking the ability to dream of anything other than height, it created taller and taller (sometimes gymnastically impressive) pancake towers. Its accomplice and admirer is the square foot price. The elevator has always suffered from an inferiority complex - it is the underachieving sibling of the teleporter, surviving on cables and maintenance men and unable to yet deviate from the straight line; but it does its job. It does not matter that the floors are stacked vertically; if the 3rd floor is in Antarctica and the 72nd floor is on Venus, we are still in a high-rise unless our eyes (these days we can trick them) tell us that we have moved a hundred million kilometers between two worlds. What is a world? In Strange Days (1995), one man’s mundane existence is another man’s technicolor: people pay big bucks to procure experience tapes of another person’s life, seeing and touching the world through a different body. Science fiction extrapolates a reality where a numb humanity feeds on post-produced dreams of better (or at least more interesting) worlds. Amiens Cathedral is a one-floor highrise - without physical teleportation there is a changing of worlds; there is no boredom in heaven. (Book on the theory of high rise written in conjunction with an independent thesis in satisfaction of the Master in Architecture degree at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, 2015.) |

Koen, B. Tudhope, J. Sta. Ines | We live in an era of the “Quantified Self:” bio-sensor technology is so widely, cheaply available and portable that we can track ourselves in all kinds of ways, in all kinds of settings, and learn all kinds of new things about ourselves and our environments. MindRider Maps Manhattan is the first study to comprehensively examine data from the “Quantified Brain” in a geographic and environmental context. A team of ten cyclists logged their mental data as they rode Manhattan’s major streets wearing the MindRider, a brain-tracking technology developed at MIT, NeuroSky, and DuKode Studio. Analysts then compared the resulting map against municipal data publicly available from the city of New York, exposing unexpected relationships between individuals, environments, and experiences. Through a series of simple maps and observations, MindRider Maps Manhattan explores subtleties of these relationships and suggests the power that the Quantified Self can collectively make on the modern city. |

There is something appealing about the shuttered windows and wrought iron balconies of Italy. This book has all sorts, from the quintessential shuttered windows, to the grander styles found on old public buildings. There is no story to the book, nor facts about architecture or historical periods, but simply the windows themselves. Imagine though, what a story there could be if we knew what dramas have taken place behind those closed shutters. Stories of life and love, of newborns, of raising families, hiding from wars, and later welcoming liberators from the balconies, laughter, tears, sickness and death. Stories of joy and stories of sadness. In a way, these windows are the portals to thousands of lives over the centuries, each guarding a myriad secrets. |

In this dramatic moment where light pierces through the trees, a natural, yet digitally inspired, piece emerges from the landscape. The organic qualities of the table resemble natural branch formations. The piece is light, fragile and ephemeral. They must assure that a new environment will change behaviours and attitudes. Over the years, the City of Christchurch has evolved from a Walking City to a Transit City and now a Car dominant City, which places the needs of automobiles before the needs of people. Now with the post-earthquake recovery initiatives, there is an opportunity to address the vital needs of pedestrians before any other mode of transport. This thesis proposes design solutions to create a pedestrian corridor – supportive of a People First City context and vision. Through the means of a bypass, motorists from areas of the inner city are diverted while the pedestrian corridor is designed to provide a particular ‘experience’ and focused on influencing social interaction and probabilistic encounter. Additionally, it is expected to reduce reliance on a single-use automotive transport, which in turn reduces traffic, improves air quality and promotes a sustainable way of life in Christchurch. |

Into sand city | Claudio Zanirato | It is a tale of the creation of a generic Italian seaside city, from the first shy signs and traces to make still only apparently natural places ‘visitable’, then going on to tell of the ‘mobility’ of the removable items, the furnishings used for its temporary inhabitation, before coming to the unstoppable ‘crescendo’ of cabins, first of all isolated and then grouped together, lined up, ‘cemented’, leading to the extreme and permanent colonization by a ‘city’ that has become chaotic and totalizing. |

Into sand city | Claudio Zanirato | The volume tells of and documents what is a journey through the Adriatic’s seaside city, through the short time of its construction. Existing alongside the pioneering and historic places where the ‘seaside holiday’ was discovered and founded are those that are more recent and at times more discredited. A journey that from north to south gradually sees the colours of the stage set fade from a picturesque ‘Adriatic’ vivacity towards the paler white and grey ‘Mediterranean’ style. A continuous, unbroken line crosses right through the middle of the pages of the book: the promenade. Above this are the images of views towards the sea; below the opposite shots, from the sea towards the hinterland. |

They show how the coastal landscape has adapted to transform into a seaside city, in all its possible forms. The photographs of various places visited over a period of time also grasp the slow and continual change resulting from the resistance to permanence typical of these shifting landscapes. Hence they also bear witness to the changes underway in Italian seaside culture.

We used to bike around our working-class neighborhood, walk to the neighborhood ballpark and go downtown to all the festivals. He also took me to more school buildings than I would care to share. In essence, I grew up with a love of architecture, streets, trees, buses, trains and lots of other things in the environment. Now I bring this to you in a format that is straightforward about who I am, a black urbanist, a young woman of African-American descent who likes all things built environment, especially when it comes to cities. Learn more about how this relationship impacted my views on place. Revisit some classic posts, with new spins, around the themes of the Marketplace, the Commons, Heart, and Mobility.
