The Port of Umatilla also operates a public marina, boat launch and recreational vehicle park. The Port of Umatilla, one of Oregon's 23 port districts, was established in 1940 to promote water-related commerce throughout Umatilla County. Communities in Port District include Adams, Athena, Echo, Helix, Hermiston, Milton-Freewater, Pendleton, Pilot Rock, Stanfield, Ukiah, Umatilla and Weston. The Port acquired most of its industrial land inventory in the 1950s and 1960s after lands near Umatilla were declared surplus to the McNary Dam project by the federal government. A barge dock on the Columbia River was established in 1960, and a recreational boat marina was built in 1968. The Port has delivered service to importers and exporters since that time through reliable, consistent barge operations. The Port has since expanded its activities to include economic development throughout the district. The Port currently owns four parcels of industrial land, which are located in the communities of Hermiston, Umatilla, and Pendleton. The Port sells or leases land to expanding businesses that create jobs and increase capital investment in Umatilla County. In the early 1990s, the Port partnered with the City of Hermiston to create the Regional Water System. The System includes a pumping station on the Columbia River, pipelines and a treatment plant. The System serves the City, food processing industries and power plants. It is supplied by the Port's Columbia River water right. Approximately 16% of the water right is being used, leaving the remaining valuable water resources available for future development. Port District is governed by a five member Board of Commissioners, elected at large from throughout Umatilla County. The McNary Industrial Park in Umatilla is the Port's largest industrial park. About 140 acres are available for development. The City of Umatilla provides water and sewer service. Natural gas service is available, and part of the Park can be accessed by rail. It is adjacent to Highway 730 and one mile from Interstate 82. The Port's barge dock is adjacent to the Park. McNary is the Port's best side for a large industrial tenant. Current tenants include Hagerman Trucking, Boise Cascade, Pendleton Grain Growers, Tidewater, and the Two Rivers Correctional Institution. The Westland Industrial Park is located at the intersection of Interstate 82 and 84, about four miles southwest of Hermiston, with four acres available for development. We also had two jet skis we brought up to play with on the lake as well. We were not told prior to arriving that there would be a lot of traffic for a fun run, but we took it in stride and the police directing traffic called LaPrade's front desk and were told to let us in and told us where to park. Almost as soon as we parked a man in a green shirt driving a golf cart came careening towards us telling us we couldn't park there, move immediately. He had a very bad attitude, and we then learned he was the owner. This was the start to our day. After telling him we would be glad to park anywhere he told us to we went in and started getting ready for our day. We went thru the checklist on the boat, I recommend you pay careful attention to this and take pictures with your phone for later reference. We were under way without launching our jet skis because the ramp was closed we were told until noon. Three of our children/young adults returned to the marina at noon and were told they could not launch until 6 pm. They had to drive to a state park to launch the jet skis which then would not start. The mechanic at LaPrades fixed them and voila we were allowed to launch them around 2:00 or so. Fun day on the lake. We tied up to a friends dock and played and the kidlets drove the jet skis and played in the water. LaPrades allowed us to have the boat until 7pm instead of 5:30 because of the jet ski snafu. So we returned around 6:30pm unloaded and the young man, probably about 17 or 18 started going over the boat with my husband. They pointed to a dent in one of the paper thin metal panels that goes around the boat and said we had caused that. There is no physical way we could have caused the dent. They then said it could not be fixed it had to be replaced and it would be $200, in addition to the $500 for the days rental. My 25 year old son climbed into the boat and pushed the dent out with his hand, then we said OK that is fixed we don't owe you the $200. The response was, well we found two more scratches and those together with be $200. My husband asked to speak to an owner as there were only kids running the show, no owner on site, they had gone home. We told them we would not pay until we spoke to an owner. In the mean time I went into the store and one of the young girls in there asked to speak to my husband about the damage to the boat. I informed her there was no damage to the boat and she said the dent will come back. I said really, how, she said just by driving it, I said my point exactly!!!!!!! We ate dinner at the Chophouse, which by the way, is very mediocre food, and left for home expecting to hear from an owner. It is now Monday and our bank card has been charged not only the $500 for the rental, but an additional $372 for what we have NOT been informed. We will be disputing this charge. Just a warning, buyer beware, if they want $700 for the day for the boat then charge it. Don't run a scam on every customer for every scratch, that is NEVER fixed with the money LaPrades collects!!!!",,,,
