Our ''free evaluation'' cost us $1,000 and caused us heartache. 1. Strong sales tactic - Brandon, Trainer and Store Manager, recommended the board-and-train obedience program as a solution for our Border Collie. He also insisted that we make our decision on the spot and sign the contract that day, stating that they had to process the papers one day before we brought the dog in. This is probably the tactic they use on all their clients. 2. Non-refundable payment - They insist on a large deposit that is non-refundable. Make sure this is right for you before paying. 3. No warranty or responsibility - They take no responsibility for anything that may happen with your dog and give vague answers regarding how much time they spend with the dog or what should be accomplished. Our dog came back not knowing the basic commands of heel, sit, stay. 4. Use of choke chain collar - Their training method is cruel and painful to the dog. It is not at all the affection-based style of training they promise. At our request, Brandon showed us the collar they use in their training (they kept referring to it as a training collar or a correction collar, but never as a choke chain collar, as they should). Brandon explained that, when the dog moves suddenly, the collar makes a noise that startles the dog. We were na?ve to believe his explanation and entrusted them with our dog. Then, after the two week period, we went to take our dog back. We watched a demonstration through an observation window. We saw the trainer, Tyler, drag the dog a few feet using the choke chain collar. The dog eventually started walking. He also started coughing. He was coughing when we entered the room to get him and coughed for several days after coming home. During the 30-minute training we received that same day, prior to the above demonstration, Tyler told us that we should intensify the reprimand in proportion to the dog's disobedience, by yanking the ''training collar'' on our dog's neck harder and harder. It was, he explained, the equivalent of a dog biting another dog on the neck in a dog pack. In spite of the initial denial, it didn't take us long to realize that we had allowed ourselves to be deceived. We had paid $1,000 for the kind of training that we DIDN'T want. We did some online research at home and found out that the so called ""training collar"" they use is listed as a choke chain collar on the American Humane Society website. A choke chain collar falls in the category of aversive training collars. The following is stated about choke chain collars on the Humane Society website: ''There is no way to control how much the choke chain tightens, so it's possible to choke or strangle your dog. It can also cause other problems, too, such as injuries to the trachea and esophagus, injuries to blood vessels in the eyes, neck sprains, nerve damage, fainting, transient paralysis, and even death. It is best for your dog if you avoid using a choke chain. More humane collars and good obedience training should make it unnecessary to resort to this aversive collar.'' They have no padding on the floors and they clean up with bleach and other harsh chemicals in daycare. As a result the dogs are constantly rolling around in there own urine mixed with bleach. The owner Elise claims the company can not afford to use non-toxic chemicals (mean while she is out of town on vacation every other week). Dogs have even drank the bleach water from the mop buckets while in daycare. Since there is no padding on the ground, this can be rough on your dogs joints and what not. A dog with bad hips (who shall remain nameless) was allowed to play regularly in daycare on the un-padded floors with little rest. The dogs hips worsened over time from all this rough play, and was sadly put down at two years old because hip surgery was too expensive for his family (how one can afford daycare, and not hip surgery for their dog is beyond me). The fencing is rusted and has many sharp, exposed, pieces sticking out that dogs can injure themselves on. When Elise was confronted about the rusted fencing and crates her response was that the company can not afford to improve these areas. Elise cares about nothing but making money. She is not even attentive with her own dogs and leaves them with on-the-clock DDL staff, forcing them to neglect customer dogs while they give 100% of their attention to her dogs. The staff at DDL is under trained, under paid, and treated like poop. As a result they have a very high turn over. Yes the staff cares about dogs, but Elise does not give them the proper tools and financing needed to effectively run daycare. They may be good people, but few stick around. The small/shy/puppy dogs are left unsupervised. They will go for long periods of time hanging out in their urine and feces until someone makes time to clean up after them. Dogs are allowed to roam freely. They care more about how much the owner spends then the dogs actual temperament. """"Bully breeds"""" (a phrase I hate to use) would be kicked out over nothing, while expensive, high maintenance, aggressive, """"pure breeds"""" would get away with bloody murder. One Vizsla (who shall also remain nameless) in particular was allowed to jump daycare fences and roam wherever he pleased. This same vizsla also bit several staff members, would attack dogs regularly, and snap at customers, but was not kicked out because his owner was friends with Elise and spends lots of money with the company. This is how things generally work at the Downtown Dog Lounge. I could go on but I will wrap things up now. You don't have to take my word for it. Feel free to ask any former employee of the Downtown Dog Lounge. I have yet to meet a former DDL employee who left the company on good terms or has ANYTHING good to say about the company. I worked there for 6 months, and while being surround by dogs is great, it was the most miserable 6 months of my entire working career. If you care about your dog at all, do not take them to this facility. Do not be fooled by good reviews. The majority of DDL's regular customers have no idea what is going on behind closed doors. Letta has chosen to use her 10 acre farm and home as a dog rescue. She also successfully breeds healthy poodles and labradoodles. Her choice for the first lead her to also do the second with the knowledge it would help pay for the rescue. All the dogs she rescues are spay or neutered as they go through the intake process. No adopted dog leaves without spay or neutering. Unfortunately even though she has agreements with local vets the cost of sterilization does impact the time between arrival & a vet visit. Letta & her staff are selflessly giving of their time and resources to all of the animals in their care. Have A Heart is an inspected and licensed facility. As to the cleanliness, when I adopted my dog from her in early February 2014, I observed one of the many scheduled clean-ups that happen many times during the day. Letta is required to keep records of the MANY cares she preforms EVERY day for her charges. I drove 2 hours to come here for our new dog & I would encourage anyone to find there next 4 legged family member from this shelter."
