Prior to this facility most down hill skiing was done by use of a portable rope tow system (a working gasoline engine, rope, and pullies.) Dave McCoy—world class skier, entrepreneur, and visionary, was instrumental in organizing and promoting skiing here. The success of this rope tow motivated McCoy to move in 1941 to Mammoth Mountain. Fleming and Alex Hemphill acquired the store, in the 1890?s they divided it into several stores. In the first half of the 20th century the Bank of Lincoln was on the corner from 1902-1911. A Look Into the Past-The Fleming BuildingFrom Page 1 of the Lincoln Newsletter LiveLife Lincoln, Issue 2, Winter 2007. (http://www.ci.lincoln.ca.us/pagedownloads/Lincoln_Newsletter_02.pdf) “Unwashed and unshaven, a tired-looking horseman rode up to the new brick building in 1860?s Lincoln. He swung slowly off his horse and tied it to one of the hitching posts lining the dusty street. Obviously a miner, he strode inside the building and swaggered up to the clerk in charge. Carefully removing a leather pouch from an inside pocket, he offered the contents – gold nuggets and gold dust from Auburn Ravine – for weighing and conversion into cash. Many miners from the claims around Lincoln brought their gold here for weighing and selling. The local Wells Fargo agent served the public from the Fleming Building. Early Lincoln entrepreneur John Ziegenbein erected this brick structure in 1863, which still stands on the northeast corner of 5th and G Streets February 2009 4. Fleming Building after 144 years. By the 1890?s, Fleming and Hemphill owned the building. Through the years a great variety of businesses occupied the premises, including the Bank of Lincoln, the U.S. Post Office, the Lincoln Public Library, grocery stores, barber shops, jewelry stores, as well as many other retail shops. By 1912 Fleming alone owned the building, and it has been in the Fleming family and providing goods and services to Lincoln ever since.” — Submitted April 9, 2009, by Syd Whittle of El Dorado Hills, California. From the 1978 Tour BrochureA Brief History California?s Executive Mansion, popularly known as the Governor?s Mansion, was built in 1877-78 for Albert Gallatin, President of a pioneer Sacramento hardware firm, [Huntington-Hopkins Hardware, restored building located at Old Sacramento] on land that was once part of the Mexican land grant to John A. Sutter. The structure, built by U.M Reese from the designs of Architect Nethaniel D. Goodell, cost more than $75,000. In 1887, Gallatin sold the home to Joseph Steffens, drygoods merchant and father of author Lincoln Steffens, and in 1903 the State bought it for $32,500 unfurnished. In selecting the 15-room, 5-bathroom Mansion, the Capital Commissioners were thought to have considered comfort more than style, since the Victorian-Gothic architecture of the home already seemed dated in 1903. A small wing was added and the house refurbished and furnished, bringing the total cost to $56,000. Governor George Pardee became the first resident of the new Governor?s Mansion. California?s previous attempts to provide a residence for her chief executive had proved futile. In 1879 a structure, By Syd Whittle, November 26, 2008 4. Governor?s Mansion which ultimately housed the State Printing Office and State Armory, had been started near the Capital, but it was never finished due to lack of funds, so governors rented houses or lived in hotels. During its 64 years as the home of 13 California?s governors, the Mansion was the scene of four weddings – in 1921 Mrs. Randolph Zane (Barbara Stephens) married John N. Osborn, in 1926 Ruth Richardson Hilby married Warden Frank J. Smith, in 1941 Dorothy Olson married Bruce Benson Whitney, and in 1955 Caroline Knight married Charles Weedman. There was also an assassination attempt, a dynamite explosion which destroyed the kitchen and pantry in 1917. Governor William Stephens and his wife were unharmed by the blast, which was an attributed to the Industrial Workers of the World, or “Wobblies.” Though the State Fire Marshal had declared the building unsuitable for occupancy in 1941, no alternative official residence was provided, and Governors Warren, Knight, and Brown lived there throughout their terms of office. Governor Earl Warren lived in the Mansion the longest, from 1943 until his appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1953. Governor Ronald Reagan lived in the Mansion during the first part of 1967. — Submitted November 26, 2008, by Syd Whittle of El Dorado Hills, California. Additional keywords. National Historic Landmark - Statement of Significance (as of designation-May 27, 1987)Built in 1857, this Renaissance Revival, two story, square house was the residence of the two Civil War Governors of California. Pro-Union Leland Stanford (1824-1893) was the first Republican to be elected Governor of the State; his successor, Frederick F. Low (1828-1894), was elected under the banner of the Union Party, a coalition of Republicans and Northern Democrats. Their leadership from 1862 to 1870 insured the State remained loyal to the Union. Stanford also served as President of the Central Pacific Railroad, which constructed the western portion of the transcontinental rail system. The Leland and Jane Stanford House is the only surviving structure associated with Leland Stanford's career. The house is owned by California State Parks but has not been used or occupied for several years. Winter storms in 1997-98 caused damage and added to the overall deterioration. News Account of the Washoe Explosion Written by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens)See Photo #5 : Published in the San Francisco Daily Morning Call on September 7, 1864. ""We compile an account of this terrible disaster from dispatches published in the evening papers. The explosion of the boilers of the Washoe took place at ten o'clock, at a point just above the Hog's Back, about ten miles above Rio Vista, on her up-trip on Monday night. One of the boilers collapsed a flue, and, it is said, made a clean sweep aft, going overboard through the stern of the boat. The cause of this dreadful calamity, according to D. M. Anderson, the engineer, (who died at the Sacramento hospital just after he made the statement,) was rotten iron in the boiler. At the time of the explosion there were one hundred and twenty-five pounds pressure on the boiler, with two cocks of solid water. The engine was high pressure. The upper works of the boat aft were completely shattered, some portions of them, with the state rooms being blown overboard. The boat had passed the Hog's Back about four or five minutes before By Syd Whittle, May 11, 2009 4. Grave MarkersSee Comment #1 the explosion. She was about twenty yards off the left bank at the time, and the whole steering gear being destroyed, she took a sheer and ran ashore, her bow providentially touching a tree, to which those not injured fastened the boat. Had she not run ashore, almost everybody on board would have been lost, as they could not steer the wreck, and they had no boats, the steamer sinking gradually astern. The boat was set on fire in three places, which added to the horror of the scene. The fire, however, was put out by the few who were uninjured. The Chrysopolis was a long way ahead, and knew nothing of the matter. The Antelope being behind, came up and took off the wounded and a large number of the dead, and brought the first news of the sad affair to Sacramento."" A Little Known Artifact From Pearl Harbor Attack Sits Along the Sacramento River By Syd Whittle, February 24, 2009 2. USS Sacramento (PG-19) Bell and Marker This article, by Bill Lindelof was published in the Sacramento Bee on December 7, 2009: A little-known piece of history sits along the waterfront on the Sacramento side of the Tower Bridge. It's the ship's bell from the USS Sacramento, a Navy gunboat present at one of history's monumental events: the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Twenty-five years ago, city officials and war veterans gathered at the Sacramento River to dedicate the bell. Four former crew members heard the bell clang during that ceremony. Then-City Councilman Terry Kastanis said the bell commemorated the service members who had died at Pearl Harbor. The bell had been stored in a Navy warehouse since the gunboat was decommissioned in 1946, said Sacramento resident Jack Halligan, who was on hand for the bell ceremony. The crew of the USS Sacramento is credited with shooting down two enemy warplanes and rescuing sailors from stricken ships. Veterans hope that long after members from the Greatest Generation are gone, the bell will remain as a reminder of that kind of valor. In 1984, USS Sacramento sailors also presented artifacts to the old Sacramento History Center, including signal flags and original copies of radio messages received on Dec. 7, 1941. ""We actually have quite a bit of material related to World War II,"" said Marcia Eymann, history manager. ""Our collections were used by Ken Burns when he did his documentary."" Eymann said World War II changed Sacramento, bringing thousands of people to the region's military bases. ""The two key events for Sacramento are the Gold Rush and World War II,"" she said. Among the artifacts at what is now called the Center for Sacramento History is a one-page personal history by Walter Laud, a sailor aboard the USS Sacramento. On the morning of Dec. 7, Radioman 2nd Class Laud had just lathered up for shaving when he heard loud thuds. ""After I gathered up my gear (the shaving cream still on my face) I headed top side for the main deck to see what was going on. When I got to the main deck I looked to the stern of the ship and lo and behold there was a plane with the ""Rising Sun"" flying so low and so close that it seemed I could almost reach out and touch it. ""I could see the pilot very clearly as he sat in the cockpit concentrating on the targets before him. He was only a few hundred yards from battleship row. These were no practice runs, the planes were Japanese, and this was for real so I headed for the radio room, which was my battle station. ""Along the way, I wiped shaving cream from my face. There would be no shaving until after the second strike by the Japanese planes."" For its actions in the Pacific theater throughout World War II, the USS Sacramento was awarded a battle star. Sam Clower of Sacramento, who is the state chairman of the Pearl Harbor Survivors By Syd Whittle, February 24, 2009 3. Clower said there are fewer than 4,000 Pearl Harbor survivors in the United States. About 450 survivors live in California. About 36 Pearl Harbor veterans live in the Sacramento region. Two decades ago, there were 138. Clower noted that Sacramento's chapter of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association will host its annual breakfast and memorial service at 8 a.m. today at the VFW Hall, 8990 Kruithof Way in Fair Oaks. Another Pearl Harbor survivor, Bob Castle, 89, of Sacramento, was aboard the USS Tennessee in Battleship Row on Dec. 7, 1941. The ship was damaged in the attack. Castle said he saw a Japanese plane close enough to see the pilot. ""If I had a good rock I could have hit him,"" said Castle, who operated a fire hose on his ship, spraying water to prevent ammunition from exploding on the USS West Virginia, tied up on the port side of the USS Tennessee. Castle also fought the fire raging on the USS Arizona as he stood on the fantail of the USS Tennessee. Castle said many people today don't know about the attack at Pearl Harbor or have forgotten. He believes this because of the lack of response to his vehicle license plates that note he's a Pearl Harbor survivor. ""Ten or 15 years ago, hardly a day went by on the road when somebody didn't honk the horn or salute you,"" he said. Castle said he hardly ever sees another car with Pearl Harbor survivor plates. — Submitted December 7, 2009, by Syd Whittle of El Dorado Hills, California. Mr. Bourne was also the owner and president of the Spring Valley Water Company. He chose the southern end of Crystal Springs Lake as the site for his estate. He arrived at the name of Filoli by combining the words “Fight for just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life” Construction began in 1915 and the Bournes moved into the house in 1917. Both Mr. & Mrs. Bourne died in 1936 and the estate was sold to Mr. & Mrs. William P. Roth, who owned the Matson Navigation Company. Mrs. Roth lived in this house until 1975 when she donated 125 acres, along with the house and gardens to the National Trust for Historic Places.
