We are just a few miles from Manhattan. Our Club is commonly referred to as “one of the area’s best kept secrets” and you will see why.","The golf course is a par 71 challenge designed by the legendary A.W. Tillinghast. This highly regarded architect has a portfolio of notable courses which include among others, Baltusrol, Winged Foot, Ridgewood, Alpine, and Bethpage Black. Over the years, the greens became somewhat smaller due to the economic and manpower pressures of the 1930’s and 1940’s. Subsequently, a program to return to the original Tillinghast as defined by the course blue prints was initiated and the greens have been enlarged to reflect the original in every way. In addition, a new irrigation system was installed in 2007. The Forest Hill course is a well maintained rolling venue with fast, well bunkered and contoured greens that provide a wide variety of putting challenges. As was Tillinghast’s trademark, each of the 18 holes is unique, taking advantage of the natural topography and bringing all elements of the game into play. Forest Hill has many challenging holes, like the long uphill 7th which requires an accurate drive followed by an equally accurate approach shot to a well bunkered green. Hole number 11 is arguably the most difficult hole on the golf course. A severe uphill tee shot requires length with an accurate drive as the fairway is bounded on the left by extreme rough and on the right by “non-negotiable” trees. The 11th green slopes back to front severely, creating some very fast and hard breaking putts. Water comes into play on 4 holes; the three par 5’s and the long dogleg 13th, a par 4. The grand finale to the golf day is what has become our signature hole: the par three 18th hole. It is unusual to finish your round with a par three but this is no ordinary three shot hole. It can play up to 200+ yards, uphill to a two tiered severely contoured green which is guarded by deep bunkers on both sides and protected by 40 yards of rough on the hill in front of the green.",,1927,"9 Bellville Ave. , BLOOMFIELD NJ 07003",Private,,"(973) 743-1255",,jason_fiore@yahoo.com,http://www.foresthillfc.com/,"Jason A. Sir William Howe, Commander-in-Chief of the British armies, marched his troops up Weaver Street on his way to White Plains. Howe and his troops camped for the night on land owned by Quakers, resting for battle the next day. As lore has it, a mile and a half away, through the woods, George Washington slumbered (near his beleaguered Continental troops) under a great oak – the same oak that grows to the right of Quaker Ridge's 10th hole. The next morning, October 28th, Washington marched to Chatterton Hill in nearby White Plains, where he met Howe in battle. The British outnumbered the Colonials, and Howe emerged bloodied but victorious. However, he hesitated to pursue them, and Washington escaped across the Hudson into New Jersey. Howe had squandered a chance to quash the young rebellion. That was the first international encounter to involve Quaker Ridge. Located on one of the highest elevations in Cayuga County, the name Highland Park was adopted. During the 1930’s, the course underwent major renovations led by A.W. Tillinghast, a world-renowned golf course architect who has designed and created many golf courses in New York State. Over the next twenty years, the configuration of the nine-hole layout was improved by adding sand traps, planting trees and relocating tees and greens. In 1945, the original clubhouse was sold and a new clubhouse was built at the present Franklin Street Road site. For over 40 years, Highland Park Golf Course maintained a premium nine-hole golf course. In the 1970’s, the club invested in an additional 55 acres and build what is now the back nine. Completed on July 4, 1974 and designed by Geoffrey S. Cornish, a famous New England golf course architect, the back nine offers the most challenge and adventure to the average golfer with its quick sloping greens surrounded by bunkers. The ensuing years brought the required fine-tuning and maturity that completed the transition to an eighteen-hole golf course. Then in 1996, the nearly fifty-year old clubhouse underwent a major expansion and renovation. The transformation has made Highland Park Golf Course one of Central New York’s most sought after banquet facilities. Barry Jordan, golf course architect and owner of Jordan Golf Design, designed and completed a massive sand bunker renovation project to the front nine holes. Today, Highland Park Golf Course is known to be one of the most challenging and best-conditioned golf courses in Central New York with its Par 71, 18-hole parkland course stretching over 6400 yards in length. Born in Philadelphia in 1874, Tillinghast was an accomplished author, poet and Broadway musical financier. He spent time in Scotland, learning the game of golf from that era’s greats. Upon returning to the U.S., he became one of our country’s top players. Later, he began designing golf courses, primarily in New Jersey and New York. His work soon became renowned worldwide. In a career spanning 30 years, Tillinghast designed or redesigned 265 golf courses. His courses have hosted more of golf’s major championships than any other architect, including three PGA and 10 U.S. Open tournaments. Many of Tillinghast’s most famous designs are included in golf’s top 100 courses in the United States. Those courses include Baltusrol (N.J.), Winged Foot (N.Y.), Quaker Ridge (N.Y.), Bethpage – Black (N.Y.), San Francisco Golf Club (Calif.), Baltimore Country Club (Md.), and Medinah (Ill.). Tillinghast was an advocate of strategy on a golf course. He did not require lakes or streams to be used as hazards. He preferred using the turf, sand and contours of the land. Erie Golf Club’s rolling hills and elevation changes are fine examples of features found in many of Tillinghast’s great courses. Tillinghast-designed golf course.","The golf course at Sunnehanna is a terrific example of an Albert W. Tillinghast design. Perched on a hilltop, the course meanders 360 degrees around the clubhouse. The greens are basically small in size, well bunkered, requiring accurate iron play. The ball needs to be placed below the pin to produce the best chance for a birdie. Fairway bunkers generally are only on one side of the fairway, which is a typical Tillinghast characteristic. Like many of its brethren designed in the early 1920's, the course has evolved over time. Built prior to the advent of central watering systems, Sunnehanna was designed to play bump and run shots. The course when playing as designed, plays hard and fast with shots meant to be played short of the greens. This accounts for the open entrance to the greens. The course was relatively free of trees. In 1956, in response to the success of the Sunnehanna Amateur and the growing influence of parkland golf, Sunnehanna would also change. New trees were added throughout the course, specifically mentioned in tournament notes were 50 trees on the right of #6 and #11, to name a few. That same year, the gully on #8 would be built, with a new green added as well. Both would be used in tandem for the first time in 1959. Six new tees would also be added, adding over 250 yards to the overall length of the course. The very nature of the course played today was influenced by the changes made in 1956 to provide a more challenging course for the Sunnehanna Amateur. In 1960, par would be reduced from 72 to its current par 70. The previously benign 6th hole would be lengthened from 426 yards to 453 yards and changed from a par 5 to a par 4. The 14th hole was reduced from a 297-yard par 4 to a 250-yard par 3. By 1961, the impact of the changes were apparent, as the 6th hole yielded not a single birdie that year. All of this area that is known as Cedar Crest Golf Course was part of the original survey of 640 acres granted by the State of Texas to Lorenzo Van Cleve as a Peters Colony land grant. Alabama native William Brown Miller came to Texas in 1846 and purchased this land and additional acres for $1.00 an acre. In 1928, at the behest of a group of civil leaders called “The Forty Millionaires”, prolific golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast designed and built the ‘Aldecress’ course on the site that is now Alpine Country Club. The original name was derived from the three towns to which the course is connected: Alpine, Demarest and Cresskill. This course turned out to be the most challenging for Tillilnghast to build and is known as his “hidden gem”. Located on the Jersey Palisades, rock formations required blasting in order to shape the course to his perfection. In 1960, the course was sold to the membership and the name was changed. In 2005, a long-range plan to restore the design and style of Tillinghast’s vision, as well as to preserve the landscape and improve turf quality, was implemented. At that time, our 19th Hole Facility, now called the Golfhouse, was renovated and expanded and includes the Golfhouse Grille, top-notch Golf Pro Shop and Locker Room Facilities. It started out in 1901 as only 9 holes on 85 acres on the banks of the Genesee River in Rochester. The clubhouse was no more than a converted farm house. However, at the time golf was a relatively new sport in America, and as popularity of the sport grew, so did the country club. By 1921 Oak Hill had doubled in size and had a new clubhouse, so when the University of Rochester proposed a land swap in 1921 it was a tough decision for members. However, the country club decided to take the university up on their offer, and moved the club to a 355-acre plot in nearby Pittsford. This decision ended up benefiting Oak Hill, the University of Rochester, and the City of Rochester. Now with triple the land of the old country club, Oak Hill had room for two 18-hole courses. Designed by Donald Ross, they became the East Course and the West Course. Local physician and civic personality John Ralston Williams cultivated oak trees and planted tens of thousands of them among the greens on what once was a farmed-out field. The East Course - which hosts the major tournaments - has had several changes made over the years, first by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in the early 1960s and later (and more recently for the 1989 Open and 2003 PGA) by Tom Fazio and his design group. In 1941 the Times-Union, a local paper at the time posted a $5000 purse which attracted the greatest golfers in the world, including names such as Sam Snead, Walter Hagen, and Ben Hogan. This tournament, won by Snead, put Oak Hill on the national golf map. Several prestigious tournaments would be held at Oak Hill over the next 62 years, including six men's major championships. In 1903, several of Toledo’s leading citizens financed the original land purchase, constructed the first clubhouse, and built a nine-hole golf course which was eventually expanded to eighteen holes. In the autumn of 1916, the Inverness Board of Directors hired famed Scottish golf course architect Donald Ross, to design a championship course in Toledo by the end of the year. His blueprints were on display in the Club’s grillroom and in two years course construction was completed. Following the 1920 U.S. Open, the greens on 2, 13, 16 and 17 were raised and a number of holes were lengthened. In 1978, George and Tom Fazio further refined the architecture, creating new holes at 3, 5, 6, and 8. Donald Ross’ signature is on close to four hundred courses in the United States, Canada, and Cuba. Though he designed hundreds of courses, he discussed only seven of them in his book, Golf Has Never Failed Me. Inverness is one of them. In the fall of 1999, architect Arthur Hills again enhanced Inverness, lengthening the course to its current 7,255 yards. From its original construction in 1903 through its periodic refurbishing, Inverness has evolved and matured, becoming even more scenic, subtle, balanced, and demanding. One of America's foremost golf architects, Ross pledged to create a course that could not be equaled. That course opened at Aronimink Golf Club in 1928. Since that time, the Aronimink team has continued to uphold the distinction of Ross's design and maintain the integrity of the course's original challenge. At first, the picturesque evergreens and hardwoods that line the fairways may be deceiving - but Aronimink's course is far from an easy stroll in the woods. Its championship design requires an attractive balance of long-and short-hole skills as well as strategic play. Over 100 bunkers, slopes, valleys, and doglegs present a definite challenge for all playing abilities. Ross designed the Aronimink course to put even the best golfers to the ""supreme test"" - that of exceptional long-iron play. The Ross challenge is evident from the very first hole, which presents a sharp drop right off the tee, followed by a 250-yard uphill climb to the green. The course also requires endurance - especially on the 16th hole with its 545-yard,par-5 challenge. And, to assure players are at the top of their games, Aronimink is balanced with well-crafted shorter holes that make strategic excellence and accuracy essential. The club was officially incorporated on December 31, and the original golf course was opened on July 29, 1911. It was a nine-hole course, and was designed by Willie Watson, a well-known course architect of the time. George Sargent, who won the 1909 U.S. Open and was later president of the PGA of America, was the head professional for a few years.[1] In 1919, the club decided to redesign the course. The new 18-hole course, which is largely the same today, was designed by Donald Ross and opened in 1921. Robert Trent Jones made some alterations in 1963, and Geoffrey Cornish renovated it in 1986. The course is consistently ranked Golf Digest's list of the 100 best courses in the United States (#44 in 2005, #62 in 2007), and #1 in Minnesota. The course is about 6,900 yards long, and is a par 72. The first major tournament held at Interlachen was the Western Open in 1914. In July 1930, the club was the site of the U.S. Open championship. Bobby Jones had already won the British Amateur and the British Open that year, and continued his run by winning at Interlachen by two strokes over Macdonald Smith. Jones completed his unprecedented Grand Slam by winning the U.S. Amateur later in the year. The club was scheduled to host the 1942 U.S. Open, but the event was cancelled after the outbreak of World War II.[1] The club also hosted the 1935 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, which was won by Glenna Collett Vare 3 & 2 over Patty Berg. Berg was a 17-year-old member of Interlachen, and was playing in her first national tournament. As with any course bearing Ross's name, it is ultimately very playable without losing its challenge - and a favorite for a great starting round.","It all started here. When Pinehurst No. 1 welcomed players in 1898, golf aficionados flocked from the North to enjoy a winter round (early visitors included John D. Rockefeller and President William McKinley). After English golf legend Harry Vardon conducted a series of golf demonstrations at No. 1 in 1900, Pinehurst was on its way to being on the world golf map. Dr. Leroy Culver built the first nine holes and John Dunn Tucker added the next nine, but it is clearly Donald Ross’s touch that you feel on Pinehurst’s first golf course. After his initial efforts reworking the back nine, he implemented changes on the front, and made further revisions in 1913, 1937, 1940 and finally in 1946, shortly before his death. The simple yet strategic philosophy that informed Ross’s later design work is very much in evidence on No. 1, which is all the more remarkable when you consider that this was for all intents and purposes his first design. Recalling his Scottish heritage, Ross made liberal use of bunkers, both across the fairway and around the green. After World War I, Allegheny became the scene for several golf and tennis tournaments, such as the international Davis Cup Matches and the U.S. Women’s Amateur Golf Tournament in the fifties. In 1990, the U.S. Women’s Mid-Am Championship was held at Allegheny as was the 40th USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship in 2001 Allegheny Country Club had its origin in 1895, but not at its present location. At California and Brighton Avenues on Pittsburgh’s North Side, the first site of the club, a 6-hole golf course as well as tennis courts and a clubhouse were constructed. The Club proved so popular, however, that it soon outgrew this facility. A new 150 acre site off Blackburn Road, then known as the Dairy Farm or McKean Tract, was purchased. The land was cleared and the clubhouse, designed by William Ross Proctor, was erected. A golf course, tennis courts, and a road were constructed and the property generally improved. In May 1902, the New Allegheny Country Club opened. The golf course has changed quite a bit since it was designed by Donald Ross, the famous golf course architect. According to reliable information, there are thirty-two abandoned greens on the property. In 1945 the first seven holes of the back nine were completely remodeled.
