The Ocean Course will become only the fourth course to have hosted each of the PGA of America's major championships. Probably no other golf course in the world outside of the United Kingdom and Ireland is affected as much by the wind. From one round to the next, a player can experience up to an 8-club difference on holes depending upon the direction and strength of the wind. Built in 1991 by Pete Dye, there are no prevailing winds on the course. Dye took this into account when designing the course. In fact, he designed two courses into one – one for an easterly wind and one for a westerly wind. Located on the eastern-most end of Kiawah Island, The Ocean Course has more seaside holes than any other course in the Northern Hemisphere – 10 right along the Atlantic with the other 8 running parallel to those. Although it was originally designed to sit behind the dunes, Dye's wife, Alice, suggested raising the entire course to allow players unobstructed views of Kiawah’s beautiful Atlantic coastline from every hole. This improved view, however, made the course substantially more demanding as it also exposed it to the area’s brisk and unpredictable sea breezes.","1991 Ryder Cup 1997 and 2003 World Cups 2001 UBS Cup 2005 PGA Professional National Championship 2007 Senior PGA 2012 PGA Championship Golf Digest named The Ocean Course ""#3 Public Golf Course in U.S."", #20 among ""America's Greatest Courses"" and ""America's Toughest Resort Course."" In 1903, several of Toledo’s leading citizens financed the original land purchase, constructed the first clubhouse, and built a nine-hole golf course which was eventually expanded to eighteen holes. In the autumn of 1916, the Inverness Board of Directors hired famed Scottish golf course architect Donald Ross, to design a championship course in Toledo by the end of the year. His blueprints were on display in the Club’s grillroom and in two years course construction was completed. Following the 1920 U.S. Open, the greens on 2, 13, 16 and 17 were raised and a number of holes were lengthened. In 1978, George and Tom Fazio further refined the architecture, creating new holes at 3, 5, 6, and 8. Though he designed hundreds of courses, he discussed only seven of them in his book, Golf Has Never Failed Me. Inverness is one of them. Department Stores. Colonial is a member-owned club consisting of approximately 1,500 members.","Colonial Country Club was founded in 1936 by Marvin Leonard chiefly out of a desire to introduce Bentgrass greens to the area. Some people viewed Mr. Leonard's determination to see Bentgrass greens succeed in the Southwest as a sign of his tenacity, but those who knew him better, recognized it as pure bullheadedness. In 1927 at the age of 32, Marvin Leonard became enamored with the game of golf, playing regularly at both Glen Garden and River Crest. He developed his own game to the point where he shot in the low 80s consistently and dipped into the 70s when his putter was hot. Leonard's interest in golf became intense to the point he studied all aspects of the sport, including golf courses - how they were built, how holes were designed, all about grass and sand. Unlike the bumpy native Bermudagrass greens in Texas, Bentgrass greens were as smooth as a billiard table. Leonard made up his mind that Texas courses should have Bentgrass greens. Everyone told him Bentgrass was too fragile to withstand the unforgiving Texas heat. Leonard persisted to the point he told the River Crest governing Board that if they'd let him convert two or three greens to Bentgrass, he'd underwrite the cost. If the experiment didn't work, he'd pay for the conversion back to Bermudagrass. The then president of River Crest grew weary of Mr. Leonard's harping about Bentgrass greens and finally told him, ""Marvin, if you're so sold on Bentgrass, why don't you go build your own golf course and put them in?"" The idea of Colonial Golf Club was borne. Mr. Leonard engaged John Bredemus of Texas and Perry Maxwell of Oklahoma to assist with the course layout by asking each to submit five alternative plans for the course. After reviewing their recommendations, he asked them to submit five more from which Mr. Leonard began picking and borrowing from both designers to create the Colonial design.","Home of the DEAN & DELUCA Invitational",1936,"3735 Country Club Drive, FORT WORTH TX 76109",Private,,"(817) 927-4200",,,http://www.colonialfw.com/,"Jeff Hunter", 149,2,"2018-03-23 01:21:11","PGA TOUR",11,"2018-07-19 08:47:58","TPC at Sawgrass - Stadium Course","Just 12 miles from Jacksonville, Fla., and 20 miles north of historic St. Augustine, TPC Sawgrass offers two championship golf courses that are open for the public to enjoy – THE PLAYERS Stadium Course and THE PLAYERS Championship.","This course was considered the debut of stadium golf, with plenty of pot bunkers and moguls to make even professionals squeal. In the intervening years, the course has undergone a series of improvements, including modifications to several holes by Arnold Palmer in 1986, and a redesign by Tom Fazio in 1997. The Quail Hollow course has two signature holes. The par four, 14th is a dogleg left that can be driven with a good tee shot. It measures 346 yards from the championship tees. A 15 acre lake frames the left side of the hole and the rough on that side slopes down to the water. The narrow landing area measures about 27 yards across and is guarded with two bunkers on each side. The two tiered green is long and narrow with about 7,100 square feet of putting surface. Two more bunkers guard the left front and middle of the green, and a collection area waits just off the right front of the green for short approach shots hit off line, or almost perfect drives. The area immediately left of the green slopes severely down to the lake, so shots hit left have a very good chance of ending up in the hazard. The 17th hole is a 217-yard par three over water. A rock wall rings this part of the lake and borders the left and front of the green. The tee shot must carry the water hazard, and a bunker that protects the center. The 6,500-square-foot green is undulating, and on the left side there is only six feet between the edge of the putting surface and the lake. There’s no doubt the format will provide excitement. Firestone has a rich history of testing the world’s best players, which it did for 22 years as the site of the World Series of Golf and now the present home of the World Golf Championships - Bridgestone Invitational. Noted for it’s length, the par-70, 7,283 yard South Course includes a series of intimidating, long par-4 holes and one of the longest par 5’s anywhere. The 16th hole plays to 667 yards. A pond in front of the green captures its share of errant shots. Usually, the casualties aren’t the result of futile attempts to reach the green in two. They are third shots from players who hit errant tee shots and find the woods. A well-placed long tee shot does not guarantee the opportunity to get home in two.Players, however, have a birdie opportunity on the only other Par-5, the 497-yard second hole. The 18th hole, though, is all the par-4 anyone would ever want to play. At 464 yards, it is long, narrow and has a green defended by bunkers. It’s not a place to expect to make a birdie to win. The 16th hole doesn’t have the market covered on length. Before you even get there, the par-3, 221 yard, 15th provides enough of a challenge. The flat green makes for a straight putt, but getting the ball close to the hole can be a problem. From the tee, bunkers on the left of the green are hidden and provide for unpleasant surprises. If a 221-yard par 3 isn’t enough, try the 200-yard 5th hole. The small green can be reached with a 5- or 6- iron but you might need as much as a 3-iron when the wind is blowing. Strange as it may seem, it is not one of the toughest scoring holes. That honor goes to two of the par 4’s. The 6th hole is 469 yards of heartburn. Leonard began picking and borrowing from both designers to create the Colonial design.","Home of the DEAN & DELUCA Invitational",1936,"3735 Country Club Drive, FORT WORTH TX 76109",Private,,"(817) 927-4200",,,http://www.colonialfw.com/,"Jeff Hunter", 240,3,"2018-03-23 01:21:11","Top Courses",12,"2018-07-19 08:48:17","Quail Hollow Club","Quail Hollow Club has what is considered by many to be one of the finest courses in the southeastern United States.","The course was originally designed by famed golf course architect George Cobb in 1961 to capture the beauty as well as challenging terrain of the Piedmont region. Supported by 60 “interested, avid, and maybe crazy golfers” from the Indianapolis area, he formed a corporation to acquire a flat cornfield to be transformed into a links blend of Alister Mackenzie, Donald Ross and C.B. Macdonald. Pete’s tour of St. Andrew, Muirfield, Prestwick, Carnoustie and Royal Dornoch and other courses, provided him with the models for his track and routing. The cornfields were pushed into wide fairways and fair landing areas, but second shots were demanding. Pete’s design incorporated innovative elements in the United States, but familiar challenges in Scotland: railroad ties, strip bunkers, sand and grass pot bunkers, mounds and blind spots. Construction of the first nine holes (now the back nine) was completed in 1965. Two years later the back nine was completed. Gene Pulliam, one of the original Directors, described the course as a challenging but fair test of the shot-making ability of players of varying proficiency, greens designed to the length and severity of each hole, a course which in 18 holes requires the use of nearly every club in the bag, an element of privacy by restricting the number of parallel holes, and, in sum, a course to be enjoyed both for the challenge of golf and the companionship which only golf offers.",,1964,"1964 Burning Tree Ln, CARMEL IN 46032-7907",Private,,"(317) 844-9928",,,http://www.crookedstick.org/,"Tony Pancake","Tony Pancake" 189,3,"2018-03-23 01:21:11","Top Courses",58,"2018-07-19 08:54:18","Bethpage State Park - Black","Bethpage State Park, a mecca for public golf featuring five 18-hole regulation golf courses including the world-renowned Black Course which was the site of the United States Open in 2002 and 2009.","The Black Course is a difficult and challenging course that should be played only by low-handicap golfers.
