Unlike the bumpy native Bermudagrass greens in Texas, Bentgrass greens were as smooth as a billiard table. Leonard made up his mind that Texas courses should have Bentgrass greens. Everyone told him Bentgrass was too fragile to withstand the unforgiving Texas heat. Leonard persisted to the point he told the River Crest governing Board that if they'd let him convert two or three greens to Bentgrass, he'd underwrite the cost. If the experiment didn't work, he'd pay for the conversion back to Bermudagrass. A 15 acre lake frames the left side of the hole and the rough on that side slopes down to the water. The narrow landing area measures about 27 yards across and is guarded with two bunkers on each side. The two tiered green is long and narrow with about 7,100 square feet of putting surface. Two more bunkers guard the left front and middle of the green, and a collection area waits just off the right front of the green for short approach shots hit off line, or almost perfect drives. The area immediately left of the green slopes severely down to the lake, so shots hit left have a very good chance of ending up in the hazard. The 17th hole is a 217-yard par three over water. A rock wall rings this part of the lake and borders the left and front of the green. The tee shot must carry the water hazard, and a bunker that protects the center. The 6,500-square-foot green is undulating, and on the left side there is only six feet between the edge of the putting surface and the lake. However, at the time golf was a relatively new sport in America, and as popularity of the sport grew, so did the country club. By 1921 Oak Hill had doubled in size and had a new clubhouse, so when the University of Rochester proposed a land swap in 1921 it was a tough decision for members. However, the country club decided to take the university up on their offer, and moved the club to a 355-acre plot in nearby Pittsford. This decision ended up benefiting Oak Hill, the University of Rochester, and the City of Rochester. Now with triple the land of the old country club, Oak Hill had room for two 18-hole courses. Designed by Donald Ross, they became the East Course and the West Course. Local physician and civic personality John Ralston Williams cultivated oak trees and planted tens of thousands of them among the greens on what once was a farmed-out field. He spent about seven months abroad, playing and studying courses and sketching the features that struck him most favorably. One mystery which still surrounds Wilson's trip to Britain is the origin of the wicker flagsticks, and it is still part of Merion's mystique. The layout that Wilson fashioned at Merion was masterly. He fit the holes onto the land as compactly as a jigsaw puzzle. As a result, players only had to step a few yards from each green to the next tee. The trip to the Old Country had certainly paid off. Wilson admitted that his concepts sprang from the holes he'd seen in Scotland and England. The 3rd hole was inspired by North Berwick's 15th hole (the Redan) and the 17th, with its swale fronting the green, is reminiscent of the famed Valley of Sin at St. Andrew's 18th hole. On September 12, 1912, the old course at Haverford was closed, and on the 14th, the new course and the clubhouse were opened to members. A report of the opening said the course was ""among experts, considered the finest inland links in the country"". This was an assessment that has been echoed down through the years. The current condition of the course is constantly compared to early photographs and every effort is made to insure that people playing the course today compete on the same course as did the champions of old. For that reason, also, the course if maintained as though to hold championships daily. There is always an intermediate rough.
