As a country, Cuba sells itself… we don’t need to do a thing. With Havana’s fabulous colonial architecture, funky retro style, irresistible rhythms of the jive and salsa, revolutionary heritage with memories of Fidel Castro and murals of Che Guevara. Throw in the odd cigar and a cracking party atmosphere. Hold on a moment we’re off to pack our toothbrushes, but do we need to take the golf clubs?

After the 1959 revolution Fidel and Che flattened Cuban golf courses into the ground despite the fact that both men liked the royal and ancient game. But golf was a capitalist symbol and it had to go in the new socialist Cuba. Since the revolution, Cuban golf has been confined to three courses, the 18-hole Varadero which is set on the Hicacos Peninsula alongside the ocean, Habana Golf Club, a 9-holer at Havana and the US military course at Guantanamo, which in naturally out-of-bounds.

We’ll keep you posted about future Cuban golf course developments but in the meanwhile pack your dancing shoes.
|

The course at Hard Rock Golf Club at Cana Bay is a Nicklaus Design that first appeared in 2010 with very little fanfare and it flew under the radar for some time, taking us a few years to fully appreciate just how good it is. Perhaps we dismissed Hard Roc |

Guadeloupe comprises five islands – Bass-Terre, Grand-Terre, La Désirade, Les Saintes and Marie-Galante – to the east of the Caribbean Sea, totaling a land area of just over 600 square miles. An overseas department of France, Guadeloupe makes up one of the 26 regions of that country and a large majority of the tourists who visit the islands arrive from the European mother nation.

Tourism and agriculture are key industries in Guadeloupe with old sugarcane plantations slowly being replaced by other crops – bananas now provide half of the country’s export earnings.

Currently there's just one golf course to be played in Guadeloupe at St Francois, located near the southeasterly tip of Grande-Terre.
|

Occupying mainly rugged mountainous terrain with small pockets of coastal plains, Haiti is the third largest country in the Caribbean, sharing the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. It’s had a troubled existence over the last century. Occupied from 1915 by the US for 20 years, governed by the disreputable Duvaliers and their Tonton Macoute enforcers for 40 years before enduring a number of coup d'états since 1991.

A large proportion of nine million Haitians live in poverty as the country struggles to make progress in the modern world. Little wonder then that golf doesn’t really play a part in the sporting life of a nation which has only one course, sited in Port-au-Prince.
|

Magnifique Martinique is a slither of France in the tropical Caribbean. With black and white sandy beaches, sugar cane plantations and rainforest interior, Martinique is hardly reminiscent of France. But with croissants and crusty bread on the menu this is certainly a French island.

Martinique’s most famous claim to fame is as the birthplace of the Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon. Not far from Trois Ilets town is the only golf course on Martiniique, which was once called Golf de L'Impératrice Joséphine after the Empress. Today, the club is simply known as the Martinique Golf and Country Club and this Robert Trent Jones layout is definitely worth playing.
|

The volcanic island of Saint Lucia – 27 miles long by 14 miles wide – is one of the more mountainous of the Caribbean islands, with a central mountain range running the length of the island. Named after Saint Lucy of Syracuse in Sicily, the island is all that visitors to the Caribbean dream about – a small tropical gem that is still relatively unknown.

One of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, it lies between Martinique and St Vincent, north of Barbados, with a shape that resembles either a mango or an avocado, depending on your taste of tropical fruit. The two Piton Mountains are located on the western side of St Lucia and they form the most famous landmarks on the island. The “world's only drive in volcano” is also sited near Soufriere, attracting many visitors to its bubbly, steamy sulphur springs.

There are three golf courses on St Lucia; two 9-hole layouts at the Jalousie Hilton Resort and the Sandals Regency Resort with an 18-hole course at the St Lucia Golf Club.
|

Independent since 1976, T & T lies in the southern Caribbean, consisting of the two main islands of Trinidad (just 7 miles off the Venezuelan coast at its nearest point) and Tobago (comprising only 6% of the total land area), along with 21 smaller islands.

One of the most prosperous and stable democratic nations in the Caribbean, Trinidad has a more under developed tourist infrastructure than laid back Tobago though the country relies less on tourism and more on the natural resources of oil and gas to support the economy – not that visitors are made to feel anything other than welcome, of course.

Sport plays a large part in the lives of the islanders with several sportsmen revered by all and sundry – Ato Bolden (athletics), Brian Lara (cricket) and Dwight Yorke (football) being the most prominent of these local heroes. Golf features too with the Trinidad and Tobago Golf Association formed in the 1960s to oversee the six clubs on Trinidad and two clubs on Tobago.

Our Caribbean and Atlantic Islands rankings were last updated in February 2017.
Located 50 miles south east of Mayaguana in the Bahamas, the tropical islands of Turks and Caicos are one of fourteen British Overseas Territories around the world. Spain, France and Britain controlled the islands at various times during the 16th to 18th centuries before becoming a Jamaican dependency from 1873 to 1959. Canada has made several moves in the last 100 years to take control of the islands but they remain under the banner of the Union flag.

The eight main inhabited islands and 20 remaining smaller islands have a total land area of less than 240 square miles with a combined population of just over 30,000 and most of these live on Providenciales, the most developed island in the country.

Our Caribbean and Atlantic Islands rankings were last updated in February 2017. Asociación Argentina de Golf was founded in 1926 and there are currently 243 registered golf courses, which include 27 par three courses. The AAG manages the handicaps of some 43,494 affiliated players throughout Argentina and there are more than 30 official golf competitions.

Our Argentinean Top 30 rankings were last updated in February 2016.
Belize lies on the Caribbean coast of Central America, sharing a land border with Mexico and Guatemala. Formerly known as British Honduras, the nation became independent in 1981, though British troops maintain a presence to this day, protecting Belize from any foreign aggression.

Rectangular in shape, Belize extends around 170 miles north to south and by about 60 miles east to west with the rivers Hondo and Sarstoon defining most of the north and south borders. Over a hundred offshore Cayes and the Belize Barrier Reef – the second longest in the world – lie in the Caribbean Sea to the east, running the length of the coastline.

Water sports dominate the leisure time of both locals and tourists with fishing, rafting, kayaking, scuba diving and snorkelling all very popular activities. Inland, Belize attracts a large number of visitors to jungle and wildlife reserves, while smaller, more intrepid groups come to explore the largest cave system in Central America.
|

Landlocked Bolivia lies at the heart of South America and was named after Simón Bolívar, an important leader of Spanish speaking America's struggle for independence from Spain.

Bolivia is where the Andes – the world’s longest mountain range – drop down to sticky jungle. Bolivia may be one of the poorest countries in the world but the country has a handful of really great golf courses, a number of which will flatter your driving distances.

The Federación Boliviana de Golf was founded in the early 1940s but arguably Bolivia's best course and the oldest Bolivian golf club – founded in 1912 – is La Paz Golf Club. Set at more than 10,000 feet above sea level, you can expect to hit the ball some 50 yards longer in this rarefied air but expect a tiring round at altitude on the Andes. Oruro Golf Club is another fine golf course which we may feature on the Top 100 website in the not too distant future.
|

Once heavily reliant on exporting bananas, pineapples and coffee, Costa Rica now earns an increasing amount of foreign exchange from industries such as electronics, software development and ecotourism.

The Costa Rican population of just over 4 million people welcomes over two million tourists every year. Sometimes described as the “Switzerland of Latin America” for its natural beauty, Costa Rica offers visitors a wonderful variety of landscapes – from tropical and mangrove rainforests to active and inactive volcanoes, from spectacular Pacific and Caribbean beaches to high altitude plains and mountains.

The first 9-hole course in the country appeared at the Costa Rican Country Club outside San Jose in 1944 and it remained the only course in the country until 18 holes were constructed at Cariari Country Club in the 1970s. The tourist boom in the 1990s resulted in a number of top-flight courses arriving on the golfing scene, and amongst them were Garra de Leon, Hacienda Pinilla, Royal Pacific, Los Suenos and Valle del Sol. More recently, the Arnold Palmer-designed Four Seasons Resort course at Peninsula Papagayo on the Pacific coast has caused quite a stir in Costa Rican golfing circles.

Our Costa Rica rankings were last updated in February 2017.

|

Ecuador lies to the north west of South America and is one of only two nations on the continent that has no border with continental powerhouse Brazil. The Spanish conquered the country in the early 16th century and it would take until 1822 before Ecuador gained Independence from Spain.

Even the hemispheres get together and have fun in Ecuador. Just half an hour north of Quito, you can put one foot in the northern hemisphere while the other is in the south.

The city of Quito – San Fransisco del Quito to give it its proper title – was formerly the capital of the Inca Empire. It’s now the capital of Ecuador and it lies on a plateau to the east of the Pichincha volcano and it’s one of the highest capitals in the world, with a population of around one and a half million people. Laid out on a north-south axis, the city measures around 25 miles long by only 3 miles wide and it’s here where four of the eight Ecuadorian golf courses are located.

At the moment, we feature one course – Quito Tenis y Golf Club – which is the only private golf facility in the country. The 18-hole course at Los Cerros Club de Golf and the 9-hole layout at Club Los Chillos are situated to the south of the capital in Los Chillos Valley, whilst the golf facility at Arrayanes Country Club in the Puembo Valley is located a short 45-minute drive away.

Further afield, Guayaquil Country Club and La Costa Country Club lie close to Guayaquil, the largest and most populous city in Ecuador, with the 9-hole course at Cuenca Tenis y Golf Club laid out a further 200 kilometres to the southeast of the city. Montecristi Golf Club & Villas sits the same distance from downtown Guayaquil in the opposite direction, within the coastal province of Manabi.

Two new courses are currently being constructed to the north of Montecristi: a Kris Savignac design named Ceibo Valley at Las Olas, which enjoys expansive ocean views on the back nine, and a 7,600-yard Steve Smyers layout called Costa-Jama, where the fairways are routed through heavily forested terrain and the final three holes are set on the edge of a spectacular cliff, overlooking the Pacific.
|
