  • ","For nearly 175 years Olivet College has equipped its students to succeed in life. By forming a partnership with each student, Olivet places them at the center of an assessment process designed to help unlock and develop the skills necessary to successfully reach their goals. Students are challenged to take responsibility for their own learning and personal development. Olivet also fosters an understanding of the importance of service to others and the community as students prepare for their roles as successful professional and civic leaders. Dedicated to its values-based mission of Education for Individual and Social Responsibility, Olivet integrates ""responsibility"" throughout its curriculum. With an ongoing focus on outstanding academics, a friendly, supportive community and affordable cost, Olivet provides its 1,000 students exceptional value in a distinguished environment. These qualities enable the college to graduate young adults who are sought after by employers and graduate schools - in fact, the college's placement rates for both are high. Olivet was one of the first colleges in the United States to admit women and minorities, by charter, on an equal basis with men. Still today, Olivet has one of the most diverse student populations of any private college in Michigan. Olivet consists of first-generation college students, students from urban and rural environments, and students of all socioeconomic backgrounds, with more than 50 percent qualifying for Federal Pell Grants. This provides Olivet graduates a tremendous, real-world experience over those from other private colleges. Under President Steven M. Corey, Ph.D., the college is working toward its new vision, ""Charting the Course for Olivet College 2020 and Beyond."" This multi-year plan involved input from all of the colleges constituents - including students, faculty, staff, alumni, administrators and trustees - to identify and implement key objectives in charting the course for the future of Olivet. Among these objectives, a traditional liberal arts core curriculum is equally prioritized in combination with professional vocations such as insurance and risk management, criminal justice, the natural and physical sciences, business administration and more. In addition, the college places a strong focus on the residential experience provided to its students, recognizing the education students receive outside of the classroom is equally important as the education they receive in the classroom. Olivet remains as dedicated today, as it was at its founding, to providing the opportunity of a quality liberal arts education and career preparation regardless of financial means, and will continue to offer this unique educational experience well into the future.","Private, Coed",1844,"United Church of Christ",Semester,Rural,"$16.8 million +","320 S. • ","Carleton College is a private liberal arts college located in the historic river town of Northfield, Minn., 40 miles south of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Best known for its academic excellence and welcoming campus community, Carleton offers 32 majors and 16 concentrations in the arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences. Carleton's student body is notoriously difficult to categorize, but one word to describe it might be curious. ""Carls"" are an intellectually insatiable group that approach learning with enthusiasm, energy, and a uniquely Carleton brand of playfulness. Broad-ranging interests are common, and friendships seem to cross all traditional boundaries. As students and alumni will tell you, there's just something different about Carleton. Maybe it's the size (about 2,000 students). Or maybe it's the round-the-clock proximity of so many creative minds (95 percent of students live on campus). Whatever the reason, Carleton is a place where students are likelier to cooperate than compete. The College supports more than 200 student organizations, and features numerous a capella vocal groups, comedy troupes, dance groups and drama groups. The College also sponsors 20 varsity sports, plus a vast club and intramural sports scene with nearly 90 percent of the student body participating at a wide spectrum of ability levels. Carleton's faculty members are highly respected scholars, researchers, and practitioners in their fields. But, above all, their first priority is teaching. A student-faculty ratio of 9 to 1 ensures that Carleton students have plenty of opportunity for interaction with their professors. Carleton students come from 50 states and 42 other countries. Multicultural students account for 26 percent of Carleton's 2,000 students. More than half of all students receive need-based financial aid and about 80 percent hold jobs on campus. Carleton ranks second among all baccalaureate-level colleges in the number of students awarded prestigious National Science Foundation Fellowships for graduate study. The College has had 18 Rhodes Scholars, and 112 Fulbrights have been awarded to students and alumni since 2000. The Center for Community and Civic Engagement encourages students to combine traditional volunteer service with scholarly engagement in the community. Opportunities abound for internships, externships, summer research with faculty, and career exploration with alumni. More than 70 percent of the student population participates in off-campus studies. Carleton brings nationally and internationally distinguished guests to campus as visiting faculty and for weekly convocations, which are free and open to the public. Guests have included journalist and presidential adviser David Gergen; co-founder of Politico, Carleton alumnus and trustee John Harris; radio host and humorist Garrison Keillor; and Safe Horizon CEO Ariel Zwang. Carleton features the 880-acre Cowling Arboretum (known as ""the Arb"") that provides a network of walking, running, and cross-country skiing trails along the Cannon River and east of the campus. The Arb was named among the top 10 places to run in the country by Runners World magazine. The Gould Library is one of the largest undergraduate libraries in the United States. In 2011, the Weitz Center opened as a working lab for creativity, where the arts intersect with all disciplines; a new music wing will be ready for use in fall 2017. Also in fall 2017, Carleton will break ground on a new integrated science complex. Two environmentally friendly LEED Gold certified residence halls were first occupied in 2008. An 80,000 square-foot Recreation Center opened in 2000, giving Carls a state-of-the-art athletics and recreation facility. Carleton graduates can be found in the forefront of nearly every professional field, and within ten years of graduating, over 80 percent of alumni go on to top graduate and professional schools across the country. • ","The College of St. Scholastica is a Catholic Benedictine college best known for health care education with a liberal arts foundation. St. Scholastica has proven its leadership during its 105-year history. In the mid-1930s it began the nation's first program in medical records. Today the field is called Health Informatics and Information Management, and the College is still a national leader at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. St. Scholastica's nursing program is one of the largest and most respected in Minnesota. The College's new Health Science Center features state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories for a new Physician Assistant program that will admit its first students in fall 2017, as well as expanded Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy departments. The facility also is home to the maurices Community Clinic, an interdisciplinary academic program that integrates classroom teaching and experiential teaching. This offers students supervised ""hands-on"" experience working with adults and children who are under-insured or uninsured. St. Scholastica's mission is to provide intellectual and moral preparation for responsible living and meaningful work. The independent college is guided by Catholic Benedictine values of respect, hospitality, community, stewardship, and the love of learning. Beginning early in the 20th century, the Benedictine Sisters advanced gender equity by providing educational opportunities to young women well before women had the right to vote. Through higher education, the Benedictines strove to provide quality healthcare and meet the workforce needs of immigrant populations. They also excelled in supporting first-generation college students who might otherwise not have had access to a higher education. This approach continues today through the College's commitment to inclusive excellence, which builds and nurtures a learning and working community in which all members - especially those who feel marginalized by the larger society - feel deeply welcome, valued and supported for who they are. The College also serves as a regional center for culture, leading public interfaith discussions of ethics and peace and justice issues in the tradition of its Catholic Benedictine intellectual heritage. Service to the community and region is an integral part of the St. Scholastica experience. The College sponsors the Twin Ports Thanksgiving Buffet, which for over 25 years has provided companionship and a free meal for more than 5,000 people per year. Students lead a community service day each year that helps non-profit and social welfare organizations throughout the Twin Ports area. U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks The College of St. Scholastica among the best colleges and universities in the Upper Midwest for academic excellence. The College is nationally known for being supportive of military veterans, as cited by U.S. News & World Report, Victory Media and Military Advanced Education magazine. Money Magazine has ranked St. Scholastica in the top third of all four-year colleges in the country based on graduation rates, educational quality, affordability and alumni earnings. Forbes magazine named St. Scholastica to its Top Colleges list, based on outcomes metrics including student satisfaction, post-graduate success, and academic success. Along with providing a foundation for responsible living, St. Scholastica also offers real-world impact for its graduates. Recipients of more than $191 million in annual research grants and consistently ranked among the most respected teachers in American higher education, Dartmouth professors are true exemplars of the phrase teacher-scholar. Undergraduate Students: Dartmouth students come from all 50 states and over 80 countries. The population is divided almost evenly between men and women. Nearly half of the students identify themselves as students of color (39%) or international students (8%). More than half (52%) of the students receive some form of need-based financial assistance to cover the cost of their education. Dartmouth disburses more than $92 million in need-based aid each year. • ","The University of Portland is a Catholic university founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1901. For more than a century, the University had been dedicated to creating a campus community where teachable moments in and out of the classroom are not only prized, but spark lifelong learning. Students learn to think critically, communicate effectively, and respond ethically, so that they can become forward-thinking leaders in any field. Students are prepared not just for a career, but for a life. Located on a beautiful, 150-acre campus seven miles from downtown Portland, Oregon, the University of Portland offers premiere undergraduate and graduate degrees in its Schools of Business, Education, Engineering, and Nursing and its College of Arts and Sciences, with over 40 programs of study for undergraduates. Small class sizes make it easy to ask questions and develop personal connections with professors. There are seven pre-professional programs, including pre-law and pre-medicine, and 18 graduate programs, including advanced degrees in bio-medical engineering, finance, non-profit management, nursing, education, pastoral ministry, and more. The University is ranked third nationally for producing Fulbright U.S. Program scholars among peer institutions, with 59 recipients since 2001, along with seven student finalists for 2017. The University was also ranked 20th nationally among peer institutions in producing Peace Corps volunteers. University students have earned Marshall, Mitchell, and Goldwater fellowships, and faculty have been recognized with awards from the Carnegie Foundation, among them the U.S. Professor of the Year and three Oregon Professor of the Year honors. Over 30% of students take advantage of 16 study abroad opportunities offered in Asia, Australia, Ecuador, and throughout Europe. The University is recognized for its undergraduate research opportunities; its award-winning cross-disciplinary entrepreneurship program; and its focus on interdisciplinary STEM studies. The University offers an academic resource center, which offers peer tutoring and advising and other programs, and an innovation center for students to think creatively. There are digital and computer labs and study rooms available in the Library, and the Career Center helps prepare students by connecting them to work-integrated learning experiences and internships. In 2016, 84% of the senior class took advantage of such opportunities. Other programs include Army and Air Force ROTC and an Honors Program. On a campus with 3,700 undergraduate students, it's easy to make friends, especially when 2,200 students, including most freshmen and sophomores, live on campus in one of ten residence halls. The University's smaller size also makes it easy to get involved - with over 95 student-run clubs, concerts, movies, intermural and club sports, and 16 NCAA Division I varsity team sports, including nationally recognized soccer and track and field programs. Four of the University's coaches were recognized as Coach of the Year by the West Coast Conference. Business, as usual, is nothing more than a starting point on the route to better solutions. Students can learn theory at any university. SOU students connect to their world as they learn, explore and discover. As our university president says, you can imitate or you can innovate. SOU sets its own course, authentic and effective. Learning extends far beyond the classroom for SOU students, whose professors encourage them to put theory into practice, learn more deeply and make immediate contributions when they enter the workforce. Through connected learning experiences - internships, mentor relationships, field study, capstone experiences, volunteerism, civic engagement and more - SOU students translate classroom lessons into real-world meaning. Southern Oregon University's unique geographic location provides its own special learning and recreational opportunities. Our mountains and rivers are more than just an impressive backdrop. They serve as classrooms for outdoor leadership, environmental studies, science research, hospitality, and tourism. Our students step outside to learn first-hand about grazing rights, land management, water quality and wine production. The wild and scenic Rogue River, the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, Crater Lake National Park, Redwood National Park, the Deer Creek Center, the Pacific Crest Trail and more than 20 miles of hiking and biking trails in Ashland's foothills offer outdoor laboratories and memorable experiences within an hour or two of campus.","Public, Coed",1926,N/A,Quarter,City,"$27.2 million +","1250 Siskiyou Boulevard, Ashland, OR 97520","(541) 552-7672",32,100.0 163,"2018-04-19 07:36:51","Reed College",Portland,"

  • ","Since its founding in 1877, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD or RIZ-dee) has earned an international reputation as the preeminent college of art and design in the United States. The mission of Rhode Island School of Design is to educate students and the public in the creation and appreciation of works of art and design, to discover and transmit knowledge, and to make lasting contributions to a global society through critical thinking, scholarship and innovation. RISD attracts extraordinary people as faculty and students who thrive in its creative culture of studio-based education. Part of that culture is the critique or crit as they are commonly referred to at RISD. Crits are a unique learning mode where students present their work to reviewers, articulate their intentions, and receive feedback. Critiques are core to the development and assessment of creative work. The reviewers might be students and faculty from within or outside the department, or a group that includes external professional reviewers. External critics can also be from other disciplines to bring a fresh perspective to the evaluation of the work. Successful critiques are about perceptive, constructive feedback, rather than judgments about good or bad. The practice and discipline of critique provides a pathway through which students develop a lifelong ability to self-evaluate and to reflect on improving, articulating and evolving their ideas. RISD offers rigorous bachelors and masters degree programs in 19 architecture, design, fine arts and art education majors. With over 450 faculty members who are outstanding artists, designers, and architects, RISD enrolled 1,999 undergraduate and 478 graduate students in Fall 2016. A major cultural institution in Rhode Island, the RISD Museum of Art, was founded in conjunction with the School. The RISD Museum houses more than 100,000 works of fine and decorative art ranging from ancient times to the present. It is the only comprehensive art museum in southeastern New England and, as such, is a vital cultural resource both for RISD and the broader community. With seven curatorial departments, the museum offers a rich and varied program of exhibitions, lectures, tours, workshops and publications. It is dedicated to the interpretation of art and design from diverse cultures, and to educating and inspiring artists and designers, families, scholarly researchers and students of all ages. The RISD library is one of the oldest independent art college libraries in the country. Its circulating collection of more than 160,000 volumes offers unusual depth and richness in the areas of art, architecture, design and photography. The collection provides strong historical and contemporary perspectives, and specialized materials in landscape architecture, ceramics, textiles and jewelry support upper-level research. RISDs specialized library is also noted for its artists books collection, its rare books, some 400 periodical subscriptions and collections of outstanding visual resources. RISD's Edna W. Lawrence Nature Lab is a unique resource for examining, exploring and understanding the patterns, structures and interactions of design in nature. A 1920 graduate of RISD and a long-time faculty member, Edna Lawrence founded the Nature Lab in 1937. Since then its collections, along with specialized microscopes and other equipment for studying them, have continued to grow to include more than 80,000 specimens and other items of natural history. The nature lab also houses live animals and plants, a natural history reference library and clipping file, and archives of slides, tapes, videos and x-ray photographs. Challenging academics, a friendly, vibrant community and reasonable cost come together to create an exceptional value for our 1800 students. The Augustana community (faculty, alumni, students, administrators, and staff) strives to embody Five Core Values: 1) Christian - As a university of the church, we welcome all faiths, encourage spiritual growth, and relate Christian faith and ethics to learning and service. 2) Liberal Arts - Augustana provides an education of enduring worth by affirming that teaching and learning are central and life-long; the breadth of our curriculum provides students with the skills and flexibility necessary for successful careers in a complex world. 3) Excellence - Engaged students, great teaching, high standards, and integrity lead to successful outcomes. 4) Community - Augustana fosters an environment of participation, caring, respect, and empowerment. 5) Service - Students enter to learn and leave to serve. The heart of the Augustana experience is a rigorous academic program taught by a remarkable collection of professors. All are passionate about their disciplines and their teaching. Publishing, conducting research, and attaining national prominence have helped to create the rich liberal arts environment that exists on campus today. More than 80 percent of Augustanas full-time tenured and tenure-track professors hold the highest degree in their field. The university offers more than 50 majors and pre-professional specializations within a 4-1-4 academic calendar. Extensive internship, study-abroad and undergraduate research programs supplement the curriculum. Civitas, the universitys honors program, provides an environment for students who desire an even more challenging and rigorous intellectual experience.Located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a city of 180,000 and one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in America, Augustana is in a prime location for anyone wishing to live in a great small city that offers valuable experience in their field before graduation. Sioux Falls is the business, health care, research, shopping, entertainment, sports, and cultural center of the region. Our largest employers include Sanford Health, Avera Health, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, and the Sioux Falls School District. The city is also home to four semi-professional sports teams: the Canaries (baseball), Storm (arena football), Stampede (hockey), and SkyForce (basketball). These organizations represent a small sampling of the many internships, practicums, and part-time jobs that enhance and support the education of Augustana students. For example, our students may join scientists from around the world at the EROS Data Center to work on United Nations projects and to study satellite imagery or do cancer research with a physician at Sanford Health. For outdoor recreation enthusiasts, Sioux Falls has a fantastic 22-mile bike trail that loops around the city following the Big Sioux River, with several adjoining public parks. Great Bear Recreation Park offers downhill and cross-country skiing as well as snowboarding in the winter and hiking trails in the summer. Sioux Falls is also home to a number of golf courses, a water park, and of course, Falls Park, the citys namesake. Finally, South Dakota is known for its spectacular hunting and fishing. Augustana participates in NCAA Division II athletics in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and has recently made many improvements to its athletic facilities. Students are involved in outstanding performing and visual arts programs, campus ministry, service learning, student leadership, environmental awareness, and more.","Private, Coed",1860,"Evangelical Lutheran Church",4-1-4,City,"$65.4 million +","2001 S. • ","Bennington College is a liberal arts college in southwestern Vermont that distinguished itself early as a vanguard institution within American higher education. Bennington graduates are notably confident in their capacity to engage and succeed in the world because, at Bennington, learning and making -- on campus and in the field -- are inseparable. Three structures make this possible and set a Bennington education apart. First, graduate-style academic advising allows students to map a territory for study and practice that goes beyond the bounds of a traditional major and serves them at Bennington and after graduation. Students work closely with an advisory committee of three faculty to guide their progress over four years and to ensure that their plan is challenging, academically sound, and significant. By building, articulating, and advocating for the substance of their education, Bennington students hone their ability to thrive in a world without givens, to tolerate ambiguity, and to see clear to a solution even when a path is not laid out before them. Second, Bennington is the only college in the country to require an annual internship since its founding. For two months every winter, students work with an organization or institution of their choosing, anywhere in the world, to apply what they have learned on campus and to focus what they study and make at Bennington. In this way, students join the field that interests them without waiting for graduation. Third, Bennington is a highly engaged community of active makers and practitioners, regardless of their field. The faculty and administration are mentors and peers ready to engage with students work in addition to being subject matter experts. The Bennington community extends far beyond the campus, offering connections to alumni, colleagues, and employers around the world. Bennington alumni have an outsized impact on the worlds stage. In the past year alone, Bennington graduates have won two Pulitzer Prizes in literature, three Guggenheim Awards, a National Institute of Mental Health Innovative New Scientist grant, and three Emmy Award nominations, among others.","Private, Coed",1932,N/A,Semester,Rural,"$25.9 million +","1 College Drive, Bennington, VT 05201","(802) 442-5401",58,100.0 200,"2018-04-19 07:42:05","Champlain College",Burlington,"
