The College enrolls approximately 1300 undergraduate students, is one of 40 institutions included in Pope's Colleges that Change Lives, and is a sheltering institution for Phi Beta Kappa. In keeping with its tagline, ""Explore, Experience, Excel"" BSC is known for making meaningful experiential learning opportunities available to students in a wide array of contexts. The College's academic calendar allows students to undertake special learning opportunities during the Exploration term (January) when they have the opportunity for intense investigation of a particular subject for a period of approximately four weeks: this could be a project proposed by a faculty member or one designed by a student and a faculty sponsor; it may be held on campus or anywhere off campus, domestic or foreign; it may be an overall introduction to a subject area or a specialized interest investigated in depth. Whatever the project chosen, Exploration term provides students with opportunities for creative, experiential, and independent study. The focus on ensuring that students make solid connections between their education and their lives after college extends throughout their four years at BSC. We believe that our obligation as a liberal arts college is to help students develop the capacity to make and communicate responsible decisions based on information accurately gathered and astutely analyzed. Therefore, BSC's general education program is outcomes-based, focusing on graduates' abilities to communicate effectively, solve problems creatively, engage their social and political world, connect their coursework to the wider world, and engage in self-directed learning. Students may choose a major offered by the College or, in consultation with a faculty committee, may design their own individualized major program. The College is recognized nationally for the percentage of its students admitted to medical, dental, or health career programs. • ","The University of West Alabama(UWA), a state-supported, coeducational institution of higher education, was founded in 1835 by Julia Tutwiler. Located in Livingston, Alabama, the University was originally founded as an all-female college of education, and over the years has experienced multiple name changes as the mission of the University has changed. In the 1990s, Livingston University was officially renamed the University of West Alabama to more accurately represent the University's current mission. Although the University welcomes students from all across the state, the country, and the world, it seeks to serve as the primary agent of change within the Black Belt region and has done so since its inception. Many of the University's students are first-generation college students, and the University provides opportunities for students to pursue an affordable, quality education through associate, baccalaureate, masters, and education specialist degrees. With an enrollment of approximately 4,000 students on campus and online, the University is committed to maintaining small student-to-teacher ratios to allow students to connect personally with their professors and peers. In addition, courses are never taught by graduate assistants, with professors teaching and advising students in all courses. This commitment to a small student-to-teacher ratio is one of the primary reasons many students choose UWA. As the cost of education has continued to rise, the University has also committed to keeping tuition and housing costs as affordable as possible. Currently, the University maintains the most affordable tuition of all four-year universities within the state. Because many of UWA's students are first-generation college students, affordability plays a huge factor in many students choosing to attend UWA. A variety of scholarships, including academic, band, choir, and athletic scholarships, are offered to students. Students with ACT scores of 21 or higher can apply and receive academic scholarships, which furthermore assists students in managing the costs of tuition and housing. In a rural town of around 3,500 residents, the University of West Alabama is the heart of Livingston. The University provides students with the opportunity to pursue a higher education while offering small class sizes and personal relationships with faculty and staff within the setting of a small, rural town with minimal distracts and an abundance of green space.","Public, Coed",1835,N/A,Semester,Rural,"$423,289","100 N Washington Street, Livingston, AL 35470","(205) 652-3400",, 5908,1,"2018-03-08 04:02:56",Alabama,5908,"2018-04-19 04:01:29","Athens State University",Athens,"

  • ","Alaskans take great pride in their individuality, and Alaskas flagship university is no different. As Americas arctic university, the University of Alaska Fairbanks plays a key role in studying the unique social and physical characteristics of the Far North. From climate change to anthropology, space physics to natural resource management, UAF excels in teaching and researching issues of the circumpolar North, and in applying that knowledge to serve northern peoples and communities. Our location defines us: what we are, what we teach and what we research. Our focus is the circumpolar North and its diverse peoples, with classrooms and labs that extend beyond our campus - from arctic tundra to alpine slopes to temperate rain forests, from the Arctic Ocean to the Bering Sea and the entire North Pacific. As Alaskas top teaching and research university, and the states only Ph.D.-granting institution, our programs attract and retain world-class faculty. Their work is published in academic journals and the popular press, and theyre sought after around the world for their expertise. That means the instruction you receive at UAF is highly regarded nationally and internationally. UAF has seven urban and rural campuses, and comprises eight college and schools. Although you will choose a major within one of them, you can take classes in others. Diversify your learning in engineering and mines, liberal arts, natural science and mathematics, rural and community development, education, fisheries and ocean sciences, management, and natural resources and agricultural sciences. With more than 360 million acres of possibilities to explore, field work really takes place in the field, on the glacier or up the mountain. A lab could have a supercomputer or ancient artifacts. And the work addresses real issues, like helping develop rural businesses, predict natural disasters or treat diabetes. Were a university, but our teaching environments are more like what youd find at a small college, offering private-school attention at a public school price. Undergraduates get one-on-one time with faculty members, even collaborating on advanced research, but your most valuable and memorable experiences may come from classmates whose backgrounds contrast with yours. UAF students come from all over Alaska, the United States and the world, and are of many ethnic, religious, cultural and language groups. We also enroll many nontraditional students. Some are returning to the classroom after raising a family or pursuing a career, and some hold full-time jobs while working toward a certificate or degree. Each student has a different perspective and unique background, making for an energetic mix and lively classroom discussions. At UAF youll learn in a close-knit community where teaching and research are balanced with campus activities and traditions, lasting friendships, and outdoor adventures. Youll have plenty of options to stay busy. Experience the Last Frontier up close and personal through our Outdoor Adventures program, take a leadership role with student government or the dynamic Leadership Program, be a DJ at the campus radio station, or tackle one of the best climbing walls in the state at the Student Recreation Center. Join an intramural sports team, or cheer on one of our eight intercollegiate athletic teams. The average weekend on campus features a full slate of concerts, plays, film festivals and other events to keep you busy until Monday. (Just dont forget to do your homework.) Students come to UAF to explore, and to get more out of college, a degree out of life. Theres passive learning, and then theres active learning. Want active learning? • ","Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, is recognized among Americas best and most innovative colleges, set apart for its commitment to being a national pace-setter in the liberal arts and engaged learning. This year, Hendrix was named the nations #1 Up and Coming liberal arts college by U.S. News and World Report, which also listed Hendrix #8 among national liberal arts colleges that demonstrate A Strong Commitment to Teaching. Founded in 1876 and related to the United Methodist Church, Hendrix is the only top 100 private national liberal arts college in Arkansas in the 2015 U.S. News Best Colleges rankings. A 12-to-1 student-faculty ratio encourages intense student engagement and intimate interaction with faculty. Students and faculty form a passionate learning community, with the shared goal of helping each student develop Unto the Whole Person, which is the Colleges motto. Despite the stereotype that liberal arts colleges are heavy on the arts and humanities but light on the sciences, STEM disciplines thrive at Hendrix. Almost half of incoming freshmen express an interest in pursuing pre-medical training. Computer science, chemistry, and physics programs have high enrollments, nationally recognized faculty, and successful alums in the academy and industry. The number of Hendrix students who go on to earn doctoral degrees is also noteworthy. Nationally, Hendrix ranks among the top 30 colleges and universities for the percentage of graduates who earn doctorates, ahead of schools including Duke, Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins, and Berkeley; in the physical sciences Hendrix is number 23, in the natural sciences number 35, and in psychology number nine, besting the likes of Harvard, Yale, and Stanford. At Hendrix hands-on exposure is the norm rather than the exception. The Hendrix Odyssey Program encourages students to undertake laboratory and field research, to hold internships in non-profits and Fortune 500 firms, to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities, and to gain intercultural fluency through study abroad. The Odyssey Program requires students to complete at least three experiential learning projects. Students choose from six categories: artistic creativity, service to the world, global awareness, professional and leadership development, undergraduate research, and special projects. Since the program began, Hendrix students and faculty members have shared more than $2.8 million in grants to fund projects ranging from teaching English in rural China and delivering medical supplies to poor Mexican villages to planting and learning from a vegetable garden on campus. Because they are used to being challenged intellectually, stretched personally, and tested in environments far beyond the ivy-covered campus walls, students can do anything with a liberal arts degree from Hendrix. Community leaders, CEOs, stage and screen actors, elected officials, physicians, Pulitzer Prize winners and Pentagon advisors are just a few examples of what Hendrix alumni are doing.Hendrix fields 21 intercollegiate sports teams that compete in the NCAA Division III (non-scholarship) Southern Athletic Association. • ","Guided by a students-first philosophy, the University of Arkansas offers high-caliber teaching and hands-on research experiences to undergraduate and graduate students on a beautiful campus in Fayetteville, rated one of the best places to live in the nation. As the 10th fastest growing public research university in the country, the U of A is flourishing, with enrollment now exceeding 27,100 students. The university has also invested more than $1.3 billion in new construction, major renovations and facilities enhancements since 2000.These critical capital investments have not inflated the cost of attending the U of A: It is consistently ranked as one of the nation's best college values by many publications. Highly ranked programs range from architecture (26th among public institutions) to the Sam M. Walton College of Business (26th among public business colleges) to the School of Law (42nd among public law schools and the No. 5 best value among American law schools). In 2016 the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching confirmed the university's classification as a top tier research institution -- placing the U of A among the top 2 percent of universities and colleges nationwide with the highest level of research activity.Recent academic initiatives include a new service learning component added to many of the courses offered across campus. New undergraduate minors include Jewish studies, nanotechnology, Southern studies, soil science, urban planning, natural resources management, indigenous studies and sustainability.Interdisciplinary programs include space and planetary sciences, microelectronics-photonics, nanotechnology, planning, sustainability, cell and molecular biology, environmental dynamics, public policy and statistics & analytics. Additionally, the U of A has more than 50 research centers, including three National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers and the National Center for Reliable Power Transmission -- the most powerful power testing facility at any U.S. university.During its last capital campaign, the university raised $1.046 billion, establishing 132 new endowed chairs and professorships. This effort included a $300 million gift from the Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation, which endowed 241 graduate fellowships and created the Honors College, ranked in the top 20 of the nation's best public Honors Programs. Honors College students benefit from 350 fellowships and a generous endowment for research, service learning and study abroad opportunities. Honors programs are offered in all disciplines, tailored to students academic interests, with interdisciplinary collaborations encouraged. U of A students have an impressive track record of earning a substantial number of nationally and internationally prestigious scholarships, awards and fellowships each year, including Rhodes, Marshall, Goldwater, Truman, Fulbright and Gates Cambridge awards, as well as more than 125 NSF Graduate Research Fellowships. Over the past five years, hundreds of U of A students earned national awards and scholarships totaling more than $10 million. The U of A is also No. 1 in the SEC in number of Goldwater and Truman Scholarship recipients.Since its founding, the University of Arkansas has compiled a remarkable record of scientific, technological, intellectual and creative accomplishments. This achievement is exemplified by the late U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright, a Rhodes Scholar as a student and eventual president of the university. In 1946, as a member of the U.S. Senate, Fulbright authored what became known as the Fulbright Program, the nation's primary international educational exchange program for scholars, students, educators, artists and professionals. The U of A also boasts a unique tradition among American colleges and universities: Senior Walk, consisting of more than three miles of sidewalks displaying the names of more than 175,000 graduates, dating back to 1876.","Public, Coed",1871,N/A,Semester,City,"$898.9 million +","232 Silas Hunt Hall, Fayetteville, AR 72701","(479) 575-2000",43,100.0 1373,4,"2018-03-08 04:03:09",Arkansas,1373,"2018-04-18 08:15:35","Arkansas Baptist College","Little Rock","

  • ","The mission of the University of California, Merced, is embodied in its proud claim of being the first American research university of the 21st century.Opening in 2005 as the 10th campus of the University of California, UC Merced continually strives for excellence in carrying out the universitys mission of teaching, research and service, benefiting society through discovering and transmitting new knowledge and functioning as an active repository of organized knowledge. As a key tenet in carrying out this mission, UC Merced promotes and celebrates the diversity of all members of its community.A research university is a community bound by learning, discovery and engagement. As the first American student-centered research university of the 21st century, UC Merceds strong graduate and research programs mesh with high-quality undergraduate programs. New knowledge increasingly depends on links among the disciplines, working together on questions that transcend the traditional disciplines. UC Merced fosters and encourages cross-disciplinary inquiry and discovery.Interdisciplinary practice in research nourishes undergraduate learning, building a foundation in connecting the ways that academic disciplines understand and grapple with societys problems. UC Merced undergraduates experience education inside and outside the classroom, applying what they learn through undergraduate research, service learning and leadership development. As apprentice scholars, graduate students build their understanding of and ability to do independent research in their chosen field, as the groundwork for entering professional life. Lifelong learners continue to hone their knowledge and workplace skills. The 21st century ushered in the promise of new ways of connecting people to new knowledge and to one another. UC Merced capitalizes on this promise by functioning as a network, not simply a single place, linking its students, faculty and staff to the educational resources of the state, nation and world. The idea of network extends to UC Merced's relationships with neighboring institutions: educational, cultural and social. Born as a member of the distinguished network known as the University of California, UC Merced seeks strong and mutually supportive relationships with a variety of collaborators in its region: public and private colleges and universities; federal and state organizations that share UC Merced's educational and research goals; and cultural and social institutions. This networking principle is also realized through the physical and intellectual integration between UC Merced and its surrounding community. The campus has been established as a model of physical sustainability for the 21st century, inviting all members of the campus and surrounding community to think and act as good stewards of the environment that they will convey to future generations. UC Merced celebrates its location in the San Joaquin Valley, reflecting the poetry of its landscape, history, resources and diverse cultures, while capitalizing on and expanding the Valleys connections to the emerging global society.
