These synthetic lipids are called "pseudo-ceramides" after the natural lipds -- ceramides -- found in the outermost skin layer. Pseudo-ceramides are created to act like your skin's natural moisture barrier and improve your skin. Seemingly magical because of the way they're designed to reinvigorate your skin and hair, these synthetic lipids are probably in many of the cosmetics you use daily. If you search the ingredient list of your favorite eye cream, wrinkle-reducing facial lotion or lip gloss, you'll likely find a form of pseudo-ceramides [source: Journal of Dermatological Science]. They work because they mimic the moisture-retaining building blocks found in normal, healthy skin. Keep Reading Below |

And they're about as attractive as cockroaches, too. That's why so many people go out of their way to use cleansing washes and acne-fighting creams to eliminate them -- or apply makeup to make them less noticeable. Of course, some people just pop their pimples, but that's a painful habit that could damage the skin. There has to be a better way. The Zeno acne treatment device may be that better way -- it's a zit zapper that radiates heat to destroy the bacteria responsible for breakouts. It may sound like a futuristic technology, but the Zeno has been on the market since 2005. However, NASA did have a hand in its creation [source: NASA]. Zeno is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and it's available in stores and online without a prescription. Although it can be a little pricey -- most models cost more than $100 -- it claims to clear up individual pimples in 24 to 48 hours [source: NASA]. Of course, individual results vary, but it could be worth its weight in acne cream to a self-conscious teenager or an adult still dealing with acne. Keep Reading Below |

Acne scars are quite common, but if they interfere with the way you feel about yourself or make you want to hide under a paper bag instead of spending a night on the town with your friends, it's time to look into treatment options. There are several treatment methods available, and you and your dermatologist can work together to choose the one that's right for you. There are two types of acne scars: depressed and raised. Depressed acne scars are the ones that look like pits or depressions on your skin. This type of scar occurs when you lose fat or muscle under the skin. Depressed scars that give your skin a wavy texture are called rolling acne scars, and scars that look like sharp, narrow indents -- that give the impression your face was punctured -- are called ice pick acne scars [source: WebMD]. Raised acne scars, on the other hand, appear above the skin's surface. This type of scar packs a double whammy -- along with becoming larger over time, raised scars can also be itchy and painful [source: American Academy of Dermatology]. Keep Reading Below |

Unfortunately, it can also mean age spots, which generally start popping up after the age of 40. They're sometimes called liver spots, which is a bit confusing considering the fact that they don't actually have anything to do with the liver. Perhaps a more fitting name would be sun spots -- sun exposure is what causes them in the first place. No matter what you call them, they're all the same thing: dark patches people get on their skin as they get older. Age spots are usually brown or black, and they pop up on areas of the skin that are constantly exposed to the sun, like your hands and face. If you're good about protecting your skin from ultraviolet rays, you might be able to prevent them, but if you go out regularly without any sunscreen you'll probably develop them early on in life. Either way, they're painless. Aside from being unsightly, they won't really bother you -- but if you don't like the way they look, there are a few things you can do to try to get rid of them. It fights us every step of the way, and eventually we have no choice but to give in. Our skin seems to be affected the most. It starts to droop and sag right in front of our eyes, not to mention underneath them. Bags under eyes are a common and inevitable sign of aging. During our youth, healthy skin and muscles do their best to hold fat back, but as we get older, they start to lose that battle and we end up with puffy bags outlining our eyes. There are a few other causes of under-eye bags. It could have something to do with your diet, lack of exercise, the way you sleep and whether or not you have allergies. Depending on what's causing your bags, you might be able to get rid of them. If they're the result of getting older, you have only a few options -- and they all involve needles or scalpels. If your bags are just puffiness, however, you might be able to get rid of them by simply changing your lifestyle. Keep Reading Below |

Although you'll likely outgrow many of these trials and tribulations of your teen years, skin problems might continue. In fact, 20 percent of all cases of acne -- including blackheads, which are considered to be acne -- occur in adults [sources: WebMD: Basics, American Academy of Dermatology: Acne]. But the news isn't all bad. With the right treatment, you can put your problems with blackheads behind you. Acne occurs when a skin pore becomes plugged and forms a pimple. Acne is often caused by a hormone increase, which triggers the body to produce more oil (or sebum) in the skin. The excess of sebum clogs up your skin pores and bacteria begins to grow, causing the pore to become inflamed, resulting in a pimple [source: WebMD: Basics]. Keep Reading Below |

Frown lines, which appear between your eyebrows, can make you look sad no matter how happy you are -- they can also make you look perpetually tired even if you feel well rested. If you're sick of people telling you to cheer up, a number of medical options exist to help reverse the effects of aging. Forehead furrows, laugh lines, creases, frown lines -- whatever you call them, they're more pronounced than fine lines and harder to effectively treat. Since frown lines are wrinkles, you can blame the same culprits for their untimely appearance: sun exposure, smoking, heredity and skin type. Keep Reading Below |

As you age, your skin is affected by the daily wear and tear of life -- so it's no wonder that your skin eventually loses some of its elasticity. Skin elasticity is the skin's ability to stretch and then go back to normal once the need to stretch is gone [source: Columbia University]. Along with wrinkles and gray hair, reduced skin elasticity is a fact of aging for most people. The condition is known as elastosis and can be especially easy to see in parts of the body that have been most exposed to the sun. In fact, elastosis is seen most noticeably in people who spend most of their time outdoors; it can cause a leathery, weather-beaten appearance [source: Dugdale]. Keep Reading Below |

And aside from helping your skin, tea tree oil has been used to treat everything from bad breath and dandruff to staph infections and genital herpes. Tea tree oil has a long history of medicinal use. The practice of applying tea tree oil comes from Australia, where Aborigines have been using it as an antiseptic to treat cuts and burns for thousands of years. By using a steam process, the oil is distilled from the leaves of a tree called Melaleuca alternifolia, which was given the name "tea tree" by Captain Cook of Britain when he noticed natives using its leaves to make tea. (The tea tree actually has nothing to do with Camillia sinensis, the plant we use to make popular drinks such as black tea and green tea.) Later on in the early 20th century, tea tree oil became the antiseptic of choice for most Australian doctors. Its popularity diminished, however, when antibiotics were discovered, but the plant gained recognition again when doctors realized that some bacteria were resistant to certain antibiotics [source: American Cancer Society]. Imagine how your skin might feel if it were smoothed and caressed with it - would you experience the same feeling? The sensation can be addictive. Many people enjoy its taste in chewing gum, a cup of tea or other foods. But most people probably don't think of mint as something that can improve their health and beauty. Today, you can find mint in a variety of beauty products from shampoos to cleansers and moisturizers, and for good reason. The benefits of mint have been long known throughout history. The ancient Egyptians and ancient Romans prized it for its pleasant aroma, using it to scent the air in homes and temples. During the Middle Ages, people used mint as a cleaning agent and a way to purify drinking water. The early colonists bringing herbs to America praised mint for its therapeutic benefits, using it to treat fevers and influenza [source: West Virginia University]. Keep Reading Below |

Blame it on genetics; if your parents developed wrinkles at an early age, chances are you will, too. You can also blame it on all the relaxing days you spent in the sun, or on bad luck and stress. No matter what the reason, wrinkles can be unpleasant and unwelcome. The good news is that it's possible to reduce those signs of aging with natural, noninvasive methods. As you age, your skin loses some of its elasticity and firmness. Some of this is due to the loss and breakdown of collagen in the dermal layer of your skin. Collagen exists naturally in your skin as a structural support. As you lose collagen throughout the aging process, your skin gets thinner, and wrinkles begin to set in [source: New Zealand Dermatological Society]. Furthermore, when collagen breaks down, your skin becomes weaker, and this can lead to sagging. Keep Reading Below |

The skin on the human face has thousands of pores, and sometimes they appear to be more prominent. You may have wished you could do something to shrink your pores, and chances are you've heard of various techniques to do so, such as washing your face in hot water. Pores are small openings in your skin. Because pores can cause problems such as acne and oily skin, it can be hard to remember that they actually exist for a good reason. Hair follicles, sweat glands and oil glands end in pores. They provide a way for your body to flush out toxins, regulate temperature and moisturize dry skin. Without them, we wouldn't be able to sweat, and our bodies would overheat. However, excessive dirt and oil buildup can cause acne, and large pores can make your skin look older [source: American Academy of Dermatology]. Keep Reading Below |

It may not be the worst affliction in the world, but if your socks are constantly damp and sweaty, you may have hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating [source: Mayo Clinic]. Botox is one way to treat it. Botox, short for botulinum toxin, works by paralyzing certain muscles, which is why it gives your face a smoother appearance when it's injected to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. To treat hyperhidrosis, Botox blocks the nerves that tell your sweat gland to produce a lot of sweat. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Botox for severe underarm sweating in 2004, but dermatologists use it successfully for feet and other areas affected by hyperhidrosis as well, such as hands, head and face [source: MSNBC]. It not only tastes good, but some evidence also suggests that the beverage may help prevent or treat a number of ailments, including cancer, heart disease and obesity [source: American Cancer Society]. Most experts highlight green tea's health benefits over other types like black, white and oolong (pronounced wu-long). This is mainly due to how the different types are processed. All tea comes from the same plant, Camellia sinensis. Fresh tea leaves have high levels of flavonoids known as catechins, a kind of antioxidant that may reduce several health risks, including cancer, stroke, heart failure and diabetes. To make green tea, leaves are steamed or fried, and then dried. Because the leaves experience a minimal amount of oxidation, green tea holds on to a large percentage of its antioxidants. When making black tea, however, leaves are left out in the air to fully oxidize, and they end up with a lower percentage of antioxidants [source: Linus Pauling Institute]. Keep Reading Below |

Unfortunately, it may take an extra second to spring back to where it started. As you age, your skin begins to lose its elasticity, producing less collagen and elastin. Elastin, as the name suggests, is responsible for giving your skin its springiness or elasticity. Collagen, on the other hand, gives your skin its strength [source: WebMD]. Estrogen is a factor in collagen creation, so postmenopausal women will most likely notice more of a loss of elasticity in their skin. Keep Reading Below |

But as you get older, you may find that the old routine seems to cause more harm than good. A simple soap-and-water wash can leave your skin dry and tight. And frequent washing and exposure to other chemicals can wreak havoc on your hands. Furthermore, sensitive skin is even more susceptible to flakiness, redness and cracking if it's too dry. If you have sensitive skin, you need to be even more careful about the cleansers you choose. Soaps containing fragrances or other similar ingredients can be too harsh on your hands. Many manufacturers now offer products that leave out artificial colors, scents and other irritating ingredients. Keep Reading Below |

This probably seems counterintuitive, especially if you're used to trying to keep pore-clogging dirt off of your face to avoid acne. But the mud used in mud masks is different from the dirt you encounter on a daily basis. Most mud masks use mud or clay specifically mined from areas that have few, if any, contaminants. That's why they're generally not considered harmful or pore-clogging. On the contrary, many experts believe that mud masks may actually remove dirt and oil from your pores, though there aren't any scientific studies to back that up yet. Some people also use these masks to help exfoliate skin and remove dead skin cells. Since oil and dead skin cells clog your pores and cause acne, a mask may actually help prevent acne, rather than leading to breakouts [sources: Bouchez, Sorgen]. Keep Reading Below |

You can get it whether you're a size 4 or a size 14, and everyone has a hard time getting rid of it. Some people may suggest fasting as a way to solve this frustrating problem -- but don't be too quick to put a padlock on your fridge. The truth is, you can't really completely eliminate cellulite. It's also incredibly common -- nine out of 10 women have it [source: Doheny]. Aside from genetics, weight gain is another cause of noticeable cellulite. Think of the events you might attend. Imagine the looks you'd get if your outfit were ragged, scuffed or stained. Now consider this: How well do you care for your skin on a day-to-day basis? Do you do all you can to keep it soft and supple? To prevent or minimize wrinkles? How do you protect your skin from stresses, and how can you help heal and nourish it? Your skin is the largest organ in your body and one of the most dynamic. It accounts for 15 percent of your body weight and covers 12 to 20 square feet (1.1 to 1.9 square meters). A full 70 percent of the skin is water. Another 25 percent is protein, and the final 5 percent consists of fats. Chamomile, carrot seed, and helichrysum reduce inflammation that can accompany dry skin conditions. The latter two even help get rid of precancerous skin conditions that usually appear as raised discolorations on areas most exposed to the sun, such as the hands and face. The best way to treat dry skin is with essential oils added to a cream or lotion. Both of these contain water, not just oil as in salves and ointments. The water is absorbed by the skin to help resolve the dryness. Meanwhile, the oil in these products acts as a protective barrier to keep moisture from evaporating out of the skin. Try to purchase as pure a cream as possible. Your most likely bet is at a natural food store that sells cosmetics. You may even be able to find a cream that already contains essential oils that are good for your dry complexion. If not, purchase an unscented cream, and stir the oils into it yourself. One more thing you can do for dry skin is to avoid soap, except when your face is honestly dirty. Instead, a gentle oatmeal scrub (see the recipe in the sidebar below) combined with essential oils should be sufficient. Lavender, myrrh, and geranium are close seconds. A small amount of peppermint essential oil relieves the itching, and because it stimulates blood circulation, it helps perk you up after a long day on your feet. Don’t hesitate to use the same essential oils to treat funguses that creep under nails or affect other parts of the body. An aromatic foot bath is a great way to treat fungal conditions like athlete’s foot -- or to simply revitalize feet after a long day. You can’t ask for a better way to take your medicine! If you think you don’t have time for such a luxury, why not haul the basin in front of the TV, or read the newspaper or a book while enjoying your soak. Get yourself a basin large enough to accommodate both feet, fill it with warm water, and add several drops of essential oil. Add Epsom salts to relax tight muscles and soreness. For a complete anti-fungal treatment, start off with a foot bath, hand soak, or wash that covers the afflicted area. Afterward, dry off thoroughly, then apply the Fungal Fighter Solution with vinegar followed by the Fungal Fighter Powder. Do the entire routine at least once a day, and apply either the vinegar or the powder a few extra times. You can probably thank your genes for the sheen: Overly oily skin is a problem that is often handed down through generations within a family. Changes in hormone levels, such as those that occur during the teen years and early 20s, can cause skin to become oily and trigger outbreaks of acne. But it's not just a problem for teenagers and young adults. Many women notice oily skin problems around the time of their menstrual periods, during pregnancy, or at menopause. Some types of birth control pills can also increase skin oiliness. There's one more player in the blame game. Blame oily skin on men, or more specifically, the male hormone androgen that controls oil production in the skin. While it sounds odd, even women's bodies (the ovaries and the adrenal glands) produce male hormones. Many women notice that their skin feels oilier around their menstrual cycle and during menopause. This is due to the fluctuating levels of androgen. The good news about oily skin is that it keeps the skin looking younger. Over time, people with oily skin tend to wrinkle less than people with dry or normal skin. How can a person manage oily skin so that it looks great? Go to the next page to learn valuable home remedies for moderating oily skin. This information is solely for informational purposes. IT IS NOT INTENDED TO PROVIDE MEDICAL ADVICE. It's a fungal infection of the feet. Also known as tinea pedis, or "ringworm of the feet," it has nothing to do with worms either. The Trichophyton fungus that causes the redness, itching, cracking, and scaling of athlete's foot can also infect the scalp, where it causes hair loss and scaly patches; the body, where it causes round, red, scaly patches that itch; and the groin, where the so-called "jock itch" causes itching and thickening of the skin. So what causes athlete's foot? Athlete's foot is the most common fungal infection of the skin. It affects more men than women, probably because men typically wear heavy, often airtight shoes, and the fungus loves hot, dark, moist environments. Contrary to popular myth, athlete's foot fungus isn't just found in locker rooms, although the moist locker-room environment is perfect for fungal growth. In fact, most people harbor the fungus on their skin, but it's kept in check by bacteria that also normally live on the skin.Skin that is irritated, weakened, or continuously moist is primed for an athlete's foot infection. And certain medications, including antibiotics, corticosteroids, birth control pills, and drugs that suppress immune function, can make you more susceptible. People who are obese and those who have diabetes mellitus or a weakened immune system, such as those with AIDS, also are at increased risk. Although anyone can get athlete's foot, teenage and adult males are at the top of the fungus-foot list. Most cases of athlete's foot cause only bothersome redness, itching, flaking, and scaling on the soles of the feet and between the toes. In severe cases, however, blisters form on the soles of the feet; fissures, or cracks, that weep fluid can also open between the toes. These fissures can cause a stinging pain and are vulnerable to secondary infection. When the infection involves the toenails, it can cause the nails to become discolored and thick. Also, if left untreated, athlete's foot can infect other parts of the body. Keep Reading Below |
