201 | 2018-09-01 05:28:00 | Texas |
Texas, the Lone Star State, is the biggest of the 48 contiguous United States and the second most populous with some 26 million residents. Houston, the biggest city in Texas, was immortalised by the TV film “Houston, we have a problem”, despite the film title’s misquote, it was following the Apollo 14 mission when Alan Shepard became the first man to hit a golf ball on the Moon. Houston is still the earthly home for the world famous NASA Mission Control Center.

Founded in 1906, the Texas Golf Association now takes care of the interests of more than 400 golf clubs in the Lone Star State. Although the Texan landscape and environment is not perfect for golf, some old fashioned layouts do exist in the Dallas region, the most notable of which is probably AW Tillinghast’s Brook Hollow, but old fashioned Texan courses are largely eclipsed by modern layouts.

Jockeying for position at the head of the Texas table were Dallas National and Whispering Pines, both of which opened their tees for play in the new millennium but their bid to top the state rankings came rather unstuck in 2016 when the new Tiger Woods and Beau Welling design at Bluejack National was unveiled.

Our Texas Best In State Rankings were last updated in May 2018. 202 | 2018-09-01 05:28:17 | Utah |
The Beehive state of Utah is located in the West of the United States and three quarters of its population of almost three million people live in the long narrow Wasatch Front region between Brigham City in the north and Nephi in the south. Renowned for the quality of the light, fluffy snow that falls within the state, Utah’s ski facilities are ranked amongst the best in the country.

On the golfing front, the Utah Golf Association was officially incorporated in 1966 and it currently acts as the state governing body for around 120 clubs. There are corresponding associations affiliated to the USGA for junior, senior and women golfers. The Utah Section of the PGA was founded in 1986, the last of the professional association’s 41 districts to be formed.

The course at Salt Lake Country Club is one of Utah’s few Golden Age layouts, created by Willie Watson in 1921 and it’s well worth seeking out an invitation to play at this private club. The best 36-hole facility in the state is found at The Promontory in Park City where Pete Dye’s Canyon course and Jack Nicklaus’s Painted Valley course are well-regarded new millennium layouts.

Our Utah Best In State Rankings were last updated in April 2018. 203 | 2018-09-01 05:28:28 | Vermont |
The Green Mountain State of Vermont lies in the north east of the United States and it’s the only New England state to not have an Atlantic Ocean coastline. Located far enough north to share a border with Quebec in Canada, Vermont occupies an area of less than 10,000 square miles, with a population of around 600,000 people. Originally inhabited by the Abenaki and Iroquois native American tribes, the state was populated by French and British settlers prior to its admission to the Union in 1791.

Seven clubs founded the Vermont Golf Association in 1902 and nowadays it represents almost 11,000 golfers in 63 clubs dotted around the state. The Vermont State Women’s Golf Association provides a similar service for female golfers in 53 clubs.

One course constructed in the late 1990s has risen to near the top of the Vermont rankings and it's the Graham Cooke-designed Country Club of Vermont near Waterbury Center. Great though that modern layout is, most still think the old Walter Travis track at Ekwanok and the Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek classic at Rutland still exemplify the very best in Vermont golf course design.

Our Vermont Best In State Rankings were last updated in August 2018. 204 | 2018-09-01 05:28:36 | Virginia |
The Atlantic state of Virginia, or the Commonwealth of Virginia to be precise, is synonymous with the Blue Ridge Mountains and immortalised by Laurel & Hardy in the Trail of the Lonesome Pine. A state with many nicknames: Old Dominion State – thanks to Charles II of England, Mother State – as it was the first state to be colonised, and sometimes the Mother of Presidents – because eight US presidents were born in Virginia.

Regardless of nicknames, the most important association for golfers in the Old Dominion State is the Virginia State Golf Association which has been serving the needs of Virginians since 1904. With nearly 330 golf clubs across the state, there is plenty of choice for locals and visiting golfers and there is history aplenty too.

The perennial Virginian No.1 is a modern layout at the Kinloch Golf Club. However the Homestead is America’s premier mountain resort and Virginia’s equivalent to Scotland’s Gleneagles, so most intrepid golfers head to Hot Springs to sample Golden Age architecture in both turf and mortar.

Our Virginia Best In State Rankings were last updated in June 2018. Known as the Evergreen State due to its coniferous forests and marine climate that creates ideal grass growing conditions, Washington has the perfect ingredients for golf.

The Home Course is where golf began in the Evergreen State and is the HQ of the Washington State Golf Association and also the Pacific Northwest Golf Association. The WSGA serves more than 600 golf clubs in the state of Washington and Northern Idaho so there’s a smörgåsbord of golf courses to choose from in the area.

Chambers Bay was until recently Washington's highest profile championship facility, having hosted the 2010 US Amateur Championship (won by Peter Uihlein), and the rather controversial 2015 US Open (which Jordan Speith won. 206 | 2018-09-01 05:29:12 | West Virginia |
Situated within the Appalachian Mountain range, it is no surprise that West Virginia is nicknamed “The Mountain State”. Billed as “Wild and Wonderful” by the State Tourism Board, WV is all about the outdoors and golf is no exception.

With around 130 golf courses from which to choose, you might want to follow John Denver’s “Country Roads” and play WV’s best – a large percentage of which are open to the green fee paying public. You’ll need to befriend a member to play the top golf course in West Virginia – Pete Dye Golf Club – but, just as Pinehurst is to North Carolina and Gleneagles is to Scotland, West Virginia can proudly crow about its own iconic golf resort.

The Greenbrier is a magnet for golfers seeking spectacular scenery, crisp, clean air and great golf. The resort’s first course opened for play in 1913 and it’s as popular today as it was almost 100 years ago and the redesigned Old White played host in 2010 to the Greenbrier Classic, a new PGA Tour event… Greenbrier’s popularity is perhaps set to rise.

Our West Virginia Best In State Rankings were last updated in June 2018. 207 | 2018-09-01 05:29:45 | Wisconsin |
The Badger state of Wisconsin is situated in the Midwest Region of the USA and it’s sometimes called “America’s Dairyland” because of its dairy farming and cheese making capabilities; producing vast quantities of milk, butter and cheese for the nation on an annual basis. Wisconsin’s largest city is Milwaukee, around which much of the state’s golfing activity takes place.

There are nine state golf associations affiliated to the USGA, the largest of which is the Wisconsin State Golf Association. Founded by nine clubs back in 1901, it provides administration for around 55,000 members in almost 500 clubs that lie between Apostle Highlands in Douglas County down to Big Oaks in the southeastern corner of the state. The WSGA, along with the Wisconsin Section of the PGA and several other state golf associations share an office in West Allis, Milwaukee.

A couple of Golden Age designs are much revered by Wisconsinite golfers; the Harry Colt and C.H. Alison-designed course at the private Milwaukee Country Club and William Langford’s public layout of Lawsonia (Links). These old tracks are overshadowed however by a pair of 36-hole Pete Dye golf complexes at Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run. In particular, the Straits course at the former and the River course at the latter are acknowledged as modern American Top 100 treasures – and what’s even better is that all four 18-hole tracks are available for public play.

Our Wisconsin Best In State Rankings were last updated in July 2018. Much of Yellowstone National Park lies within Wyoming, attracting over three million visitors annually.

The Wyoming State Golf Association was formed in 1923 and both the Men’s and Women’s State Championships date back to then. WSGA also oversees USGA Amateur Public Links Qualifying as well as organizing an annual state Matchplay Championship, Junior Amateur Championship and Senior Amateur Championship.

Despite the unveiling near Jackson of new millennium designs from architectural heavyweights like Tom Fazio (Shooting Star) and Rees Jones (3 Creek Ranch), Dick Bailey’s 27-hole golf complex further north east at Powder Horn in Sheridan is still viewed as one of the best courses that Wyoming has to offer.

Our Wyoming Best In State Rankings were last updated in April 2018. The state capital Canberra is also the seat of government for the nation and it celebrated the centenary of its foundation in 2013.

There are ten clubs in ACT affiliated to the 24-club ACT Monaro District Golf Association which in turn is one of twenty Men’s Country Districts in membership of Golf NSW. Whilst the John Harris-designed Royal Canberra (Westbourne) layout stands head and shoulders above all the other courses in ACT, that’s not to say the others should be easily dismissed.

For instance, the old Federal course at Red Hill (dating back to 1933) has many admirers, as do a couple of mid-1990s designs at Gungahlin Lakes and Gold Creek.

Our ACT Rankings were last updated in November 2016. 210 | 2018-09-01 05:30:14 | New South Wales |
Discovered by Captain James Cook in 1770, New South Wales lies to the south east of Australia and it’s the most populous state in the country with around seven and a half million inhabitants. In a sports-mad nation, New South Welshmen (of both sexes) love their National Rugby League, Australian Rules football and cricket. And, of course, who could ever forget the fantastic summer Olympic Games that Sydney hosted in 2000?

Amateur golf in the state is administered by GolfNSW, a governing body formed in 2010 by the amalgamation of the NSW Golf Association and Women’s Golf NSW. Over 400 clubs are divided into three metropolitan zones around Sydney with 20 outlying districts for men and 13 districts for ladies.

New South Wales golfers are fortunate to have a number of fine old courses on their doorstep, some of which – like the Australian and Royal Sydney – have been in existence for more than a hundred years. Another two older layouts that first opened for business in 1928, New South Wales and Lakes, are also much admired and cherished. Amongst the more recent courses unveiled in the state, Graham Marsh’s Terrey Hills and Ross Watson’s Magenta Shores have received plenty of plaudits.

Our New South Wales Best In State Rankings were last updated in November 2016. 211 | 2018-09-01 05:30:34 | Northern Territory |
The Northern Territory is an enormous expanse of largely desert terrain in the north of Australia that extends to over half a million square miles. It’s the most sparsely populated state or territory in the country, with most of its population of around quarter of a million people living along the Stuart Highway that links Darwin, the capital, to the rest of Australia.

Golf NT is the governing body for amateur golf in the Northern Territory, reporting to Golf Australia on all golfing matters in a region that’s as big as France, Spain and Italy combined. Currently, there are eleven courses, seven of which are 9-hole layouts, spread out across this massive area.

The four clubs with full 18-hole designs are Palmerston in Driver (the layout plays to a par of 70), Tennant Creek (which features sand greens), Darwin (the current track opened in 1974) and Alice Springs, where the course was officially opened by Greg Norman and Johnnie Miller in 1985.
|

212 | 2018-09-01 05:30:42 | Queensland |
Queensland is situated in the north east of Australia – occupying an area of more than 700,000 square miles – and its population of around four and a half million is concentrated along the Pacific coastline. Queenslanders, like all Australians, love their sport and swimming is one of the most popular – evidenced by the fact that all six of Australia’s gold medals at the Beijing 2008 summer Olympics were won by swimmers from the Sunshine State.

Golf Queensland was formed in 2007 following the merging of the Queensland Golf Union and Women’s Golf Queensland so that all the state’s male and female golfers in around 270 clubs are now organised within nineteen district associations which are governed by the one unified authority.

As you might expect from Greg Norman, Queensland’s favourite golfing son, he has designed a number of top modern tracks around the state capital of Brisbane, including Brookwater, Glades, Pelican Waters and Grand. Another course that merits attention is the 18-hole layout at Royal Queensland, an old Carnegie Clark design that Michael Clayton has recently overhauled.

Our Queensland Best In State Rankings were last updated in November 2016. 213 | 2018-09-01 05:30:59 | South Australia |
The Festival State of South Australia occupies the southern central part of the country, much of which is arid, desert scrubland. The majority of the state’s one and a half million people live in or close to Adelaide, the capital. Like most Australians, they love their sport, though Australian Rules football and cricket come way ahead of golf in the popularity stakes.

The South Australian Golf Association – now rebranded as Golf SA – celebrated its centenary in 2004 and it currently governs amateur members in around one hundred and sixty clubs that are grouped into nine districts within the state. Golf SA also organises annual competitions for every category of golfer; male, female, junior and vets.

The course at Royal Adelaide is by far the finest 18-hole layout in the state. Indeed, this venerable old Alister MacKenzie track – which hosted the Australian Open nine times between 1910 and 1998 – makes regular appearances in the World Top 100 rankings. Other noteworthy courses in South Australia include a couple of Cargie Rymill designs at Kooyonga and Glenelg plus a pair of Vern Morcom courses at Grange (West) and Grange (East).

Our South Australia Best In State Rankings were last updated in November 2016. 214 | 2018-09-01 05:31:04 | Tasmania |
The island state of Tasmania lies 150 miles off the south coast of Australia, separated from the mainland by the Bass Strait. A former 19th century British penal colony known as Van Dieman’s Land, Tasmania is now home to around half a million inhabitants, many of whom reside in and around the state capital of Hobart.

Amateur golf in the state is administered by Golf Tasmania and there are more than fifty clubs affiliated to this organisation. Every year, a large variety of men’s, women’s, junior and senior competitions are organised by the governing body for the benefit of the membership.

Until recently, the Vern Morcom-designed Royal Hobart course (which celebrated the 50th anniversary of its opening in 2013) and Al Howard’s Tasmania (laid out with Ian Grimsey in 1971) were considered the top two tracks in the state. That all changed with the unveiling of a couple of world class courses – Barnbougle Dunes and Barnbougle Lost Farm – outside Bridport, on the island’s north coast.

However, things are changing once again. Now the world's focus is on King Island, which promises to overtake its much bigger island sibling as the must-visit golfing destination The arrival of Cape Wickham and Ocean Dunes has step-changed the Australian golfing landscape once again. Some think Cape Wickham could be Australia's future No.1.

Our Tasmania Best In State Rankings were last updated in November 2016. Click the link to read the story.

|

215 | 2018-09-01 05:31:13 | Victoria |
The Garden State of Victoria, extending to just over 90,000 square miles, is the smallest state in the mainland of Australia though its five and a half million inhabitants make it the most densely populated. Melbourne, the state capital and largest city, is where all the top sporting action takes place; from Melbourne Park (venue for the Australian Open Tennis) to Flemington Racecourse (where the Melbourne Cup is run).

Since 2010, Golf Victoria has represented male and female golfers who are members of almost 400 clubs in the state following the amalgamation of the Victorian Golf Association (formed in 1902) and the Victorian Ladies Golf Union (founded in 1906). The governing body organises dozens of competitions every year for men, women, senior and junior golfers.

The crème de la crème of Australian courses are found in Victoria and many of them are located on the famous Melbourne sandbelt where old favourites from the 1920s and 1930s like Royal Melbourne (West) and (East), Kingston Heath and Commonwealth vie for the top positions in the national rankings with more contemporary tracks on the Mornington Peninsula like Greg Norman’s National (Moonah) and Tom Doak’s St Andrews Beach.

Our Victoria Best In State Rankings were last updated in November 2016. 216 | 2018-09-01 05:31:23 | Western Australia |
Bounded by the Indian Ocean on three sides and bordering the Northern Territory and South Australia on its eastern flank, Western Australia – which has an enormous landmass of over a million square miles – is the largest state by area in Australia. Most of its two and a half million residents live in and around the capital of Perth in the southwest corner of the state, with a large percentage of the population claiming European descendancy.

Golf WA is the amateur governing body for both male and female golfers who are members of over 250 clubs in Western Australia. Men are arranged in 24 districts and women organised into 15 regions. Women golfers were actually quicker off the mark when they established the Western Austrian Ladies Golf Union in 1914, seven years ahead of their male counterparts, the Western Australian Golf Association.

There are several highly regarded old tracks from the 1920s and 1930s to be found in the state, though they’ve all undergone some sort of upgrading work in recent times. The old Alex Russell layout at Lake Karrinyup is best of the bunch, though Cottesloe, Western Australian and Mount Lawley all have their admirers. Of the newer courses that have appeared in the last decade or so, Kennedy Bay and the Cut have received most of the accolades.

Our Western Australia Best In State Rankings were last updated in November 2016. 217 | 2018-09-01 05:31:29 | North Island |
The North Island of New Zealand mixes rugged volcanic landscapes with laid-back city life, and is blessed with a delightfully mild climate. More than half of the island’s 3.3 million inhabitants live in the two main cities (Auckland and the capital, Wellington), leaving the rest of the island rather sparsely populated.

From a golfing point of view, the landscape has changed dramatically since the turn of the 21st century, with overseas clients utilising the amazing landscape on offer to build some truly world-class courses. Before that time, the links at Paraparaumu Beach (opened in 1949) was the flagship course for the entire country, and it remains one of the nation’s best.

However, the fledgling clifftop cousins at Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers are now the ones that sit comfortably within some World Top 100 lists, as well as being two of the most scenic places to play the game anywhere.

Our North Island rankings were last updated in March 2017.

|

The other great delight is that the Kiwis have utilised this awesome land to the full and built some world-class golf courses.

There are currently 397 golf courses in NZ and according to New Zealand Golf, the country’s governing body, almost 500,000 adults play golf each year in NZ, making golf the highest participation sport in the country. It’s the No.1 one sport for men and the No.2 sport for women just behind netball. We are surprised, given the popularity of golf in New Zealand, that nobody has yet produced a New Zealand Top 100. 218 | 2018-09-01 05:31:29 | South Island |
The South Island is arguably the more dramatic of the two main islands of New Zealand – there are few more beautiful places on the planet. A lap of the island will see you take in fjords, mountains, glaciers, rainforest, vineyards, incredible beaches and stunning lakes, all within an area around the size of England. However, with a population of just over one million, it is fifty times less crowded.

Unpopulated until Maori arrived around 500 years ago, European (and Chinese) people started arriving in numbers around the time of the gold rushes of the 1860s, and it is soon after this that golf arrived on the island, with the Otago Golf Club in Dunedin being the first, established in 1871. Nowadays, the undoubted hub of quality golf courses is Queenstown – our top three South Island courses are all to be found near this stunning lakeside destination.

Our South Island rankings were last updated in March 2017.

|
