Alaskans take great pride in their individuality, and Alaskas flagship university is no different. As Americas arctic university, the University of Alaska Fairbanks plays a key role in studying the unique social and physical characteristics of the Far North. From climate change to anthropology, space physics to natural resource management, UAF excels in teaching and researching issues of the circumpolar North, and in applying that knowledge to serve northern peoples and communities. Our location defines us: what we are, what we teach and what we research. Our focus is the circumpolar North and its diverse peoples, with classrooms and labs that extend beyond our campus - from arctic tundra to alpine slopes to temperate rain forests, from the Arctic Ocean to the Bering Sea and the entire North Pacific. As Alaskas top teaching and research university, and the states only Ph.D.-granting institution, our programs attract and retain world-class faculty. Their work is published in academic journals and the popular press, and theyre sought after around the world for their expertise. That means the instruction you receive at UAF is highly regarded nationally and internationally. UAF has seven urban and rural campuses, and comprises eight college and schools. Although you will choose a major within one of them, you can take classes in others. Diversify your learning in engineering and mines, liberal arts, natural science and mathematics, rural and community development, education, fisheries and ocean sciences, management, and natural resources and agricultural sciences. With more than 360 million acres of possibilities to explore, field work really takes place in the field, on the glacier or up the mountain. A lab could have a supercomputer or ancient artifacts. And the work addresses real issues, like helping develop rural businesses, predict natural disasters or treat diabetes. Were a university, but our teaching environments are more like what youd find at a small college, offering private-school attention at a public school price. Undergraduates get one-on-one time with faculty members, even collaborating on advanced research, but your most valuable and memorable experiences may come from classmates whose backgrounds contrast with yours. UAF students come from all over Alaska, the United States and the world, and are of many ethnic, religious, cultural and language groups. We also enroll many nontraditional students. Some are returning to the classroom after raising a family or pursuing a career, and some hold full-time jobs while working toward a certificate or degree. Each student has a different perspective and unique background, making for an energetic mix and lively classroom discussions. At UAF youll learn in a close-knit community where teaching and research are balanced with campus activities and traditions, lasting friendships, and outdoor adventures. Youll have plenty of options to stay busy. Experience the Last Frontier up close and personal through our Outdoor Adventures program, take a leadership role with student government or the dynamic Leadership Program, be a DJ at the campus radio station, or tackle one of the best climbing walls in the state at the Student Recreation Center. Join an intramural sports team, or cheer on one of our eight intercollegiate athletic teams. The average weekend on campus features a full slate of concerts, plays, film festivals and other events to keep you busy until Monday. (Just dont forget to do your homework.) Students come to UAF to explore, and to get more out of college, a degree out of life. Theres passive learning, and then theres active learning. Want active learning? Choose UAF. |

In 1885, Jane and Leland Stanford established Stanford University in memory of their son, Leland Junior. Their intent was to establish a "University of high degree" that would "qualify students for personal success and direct usefulness in life and promote the public welfare by exercising an influence on behalf of humanity and civilization." Today, Stanford is a research university where teaching, learning and research are integral to the university's mission. Stanford values close interaction between undergraduates and faculty. Student participation in research is strongly supported and, in 2016-17, Stanford allocated about $5.5 million to support more than 1,000 projects. Stanford's entrepreneurial character draws from its Western location, the legacy of its founders and its proximity to Silicon Valley. Stanford emphasizes multidisciplinary approaches to teaching and research, and academic excellence crosses disciplines, ranging from humanities to social sciences to engineering and the sciences. Current faculty members have earned 20 Nobel Prizes and 4 Pulitzer Prizes. Students, distinguished by initiative, love of learning and commitment to public service, are talented in many areas, including academics, art, music and athletics. Stanford's athletic teams, called the Cardinal, have won the Directors Cup as the best program nationwide 22 years in a row. Stanford's extraordinary campus is located in a dynamic and diverse area between San Francisco and San Jose in Northern California. The campus is considered among the most beautiful and most environmentally sustainable anywhere. The Bing Overseas Studies Program has offerings in Australia, Berlin, Cape Town, Florence, Istanbul, Kyoto, Madrid, Oxford, Paris and Santiago. Other Stanford programs take students to the Hopkins Marine Laboratory on Monterey Bay, New York City and to Washington D.C. The arts are emphasized on the Stanford campus, and a new arts district includes the Bing Concert Hall, the McMurtry Building for Art and Art History, the Cantor Arts Center and the Anderson Collection at Stanford University. There are about 625 organized student groups at Stanford. The student newspaper is the Stanford Daily. The Associated Students of Stanford University is the representative government for Stanford students. There are about 35 recognized religious organizations. Stanford offers seven community centers: Asian American Activities Center, Black Community Services Center, El Centro Chicano y Latino, LGBT Community Resource Center, Native American Cultural Center, Women's Community Center and the Markaz: Resource Center to engage with Muslim identities and experiences. |

Today, Stanford is a research university where teaching, learning and research are integral to the university's mission. |

Located in the heart of Los Angeles, a global center for arts, technology and international trade, the University of Southern California is a world-renowned private research institution enrolling more international students than any other U.S. university and operating an integrated academic medical center that serves more than a million patients each year. USC operates from two main campuses. The University Park campus, south of downtown Los Angeles, is adjacent to the museums and recreational facilities of historic Exposition Park. With its park-like atmosphere and rich architectural history, the campus fosters a stimulating academic environment as well as a vibrant cultural community. The Health Sciences campus, northeast of downtown, offers world-class patient care, classroom and laboratory facilities that draw scientists, patients and students from around the world, forming a dynamic, interactive environment shaping the future of health care. Within the USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and 18 professional schools, USC encourages all students to cross traditional boundaries in their pursuit of knowledge. The university offers bachelors degrees in 190 majors. As of fall 2015, graduate students were enrolled in nearly 481 masters, certificate, doctoral and professional degree programs. With 199 different academic and professional minors, USC offers the broadest selection of any U.S. university. Selected students may participate in Thematic Option, USCs interdisciplinary undergraduate honors program. The Renaissance Scholars program honors students who study subjects across disparate fields. USC also presents opportunities for travel, independent discovery, and addressing basic questions of human value and social challenges affecting our country and the world. The Global Scholars program honors undergraduates who excel both at home and abroad, the Discovery Scholars program recognizes students who demonstrate original research and creativity, and the USC Dornsife Scholars program honors graduating college seniors who combine the talents sought in the USC Discovery and Global Scholars programs with an added emphasis on positive human impact. At the graduate level, each year the Provosts Ph.D. Fellowship Program supports 100 doctoral students who show exceptional promise. The USC Annenberg Graduate Fellowship Program funds cutting-edge study in communication and digital media, and USCs Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) program offers grants and fellowships to increase the involvement of women in science and engineering. The new Provosts Postdoctoral Scholars Program in the Humanities eventually will attract up to 10 outstanding humanities scholars to USC.The university also commits itself to fostering research with wide-ranging social impacts and is one of a few premier research institutions upon which the United States depends for a steady stream of new knowledge, art and technology.Unusual among major research institutions, the University of Southern California is home to six arts schools, in the disciplines of cinematic arts, music, dramatic arts, architecture, fine arts, and dance. Other top-ranked programs include art history, creative writing, a masters program in professional writing and the new USC International Artists Fellowships, graduate fellowships for promising artists from across the Pacific Rim, Latin America and Southeast Asia. The universitys innovative and university-wide Visions & Voices arts and humanities initiative has few parallels in higher education. It features a spectacular array of events conceived and organized by university faculty and schools, including presentations by critically acclaimed artists and distinguished speakers, theatrical productions, music and dance performances, film screenings, lectures and workshops on both USC campuses, as well as a variety of opportunities to experience the dynamic cultural landscape of Los Angeles. |

Western features a full liberal arts curriculum including one of only 10 undergraduate Petroleum Geology programs in the U.S., one of eight Professional Land & Resource Management programs and a new Master in Environmental Management. Classes average just 17 students in more than 50 graduate and undergraduate areas of study. And instead of teaching assistants, students learn from full-time faculty members the majority of whom hold the highest degrees in their disciplines. Popular majors at Western include Business Administration, Exercise & Sport Science, Recreation & Outdoor Education, Art, Education, Environment & Sustainability and Biology. Because the university perches at 7,700 feet above sea level, surrounded by millions of wilderness acres, students can learn in and from a spectacular mountain laboratory. The areas diverse ecosystems and geologic formations provide natural research facilities for a host of scientific studies. Western even owns a key geologic formation, Tenderfoot Mountain. At this world-renowned archaeological site, students and professional researchers learn about the Americas earliest human inhabitants. Exercise & Sport Science students conduct original research on athletic performance in the Westerns state-of-the-art High Altitude Performance Laboratory, now in the universitys new, 119,000-square-foot Mountaineer Field House complex. The university offers students a full spectrum of extracurricular activities, club sports and NCAA athletics. Students in Westerns Mountain Sports program compete and document performances in skiing, mountain biking, trail running and more. Students can rent skis, kayaks, camping gear and other outdoor equipment through and experience adventures led by Westerns Wilderness Pursuits office. Other opportunities include theater, band and choral groups; performance poetry, student literary and arts publications; a student newspaper, video production studio and radio station KWSB; academic and professional societies; and a long list of intramural sports. Western also supports the Americas only certified collegiate mountain rescue team, which partners with law enforcement to save lives in the backcountry. Western also focuses on improving environmental awareness and resource efficiency through its campus climate commitment, green building and renovation practices, and a student-initiated sustainability grant program, paired with service-learning projects.Experience Learning, Elevated at Western. |
