The Ocean Course will become only the fourth course to have hosted each of the PGA of America's major championships. Probably no other golf course in the world outside of the United Kingdom and Ireland is affected as much by the wind. From one round to the next, a player can experience up to an 8-club difference on holes depending upon the direction and strength of the wind. Built in 1991 by Pete Dye, there are no prevailing winds on the course. Dye took this into account when designing the course. In fact, he designed two courses into one – one for an easterly wind and one for a westerly wind. Located on the eastern-most end of Kiawah Island, The Ocean Course has more seaside holes than any other course in the Northern Hemisphere – 10 right along the Atlantic with the other 8 running parallel to those. Although it was originally designed to sit behind the dunes, Dye's wife, Alice, suggested raising the entire course to allow players unobstructed views of Kiawah’s beautiful Atlantic coastline from every hole. This improved view, however, made the course substantially more demanding as it also exposed it to the area’s brisk and unpredictable sea breezes. |

107 | 2018-07-19 09:00:37 | Royal Lytham Golf Club | Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club was founded in 1886 and the present Course constructed in 1897. The Clubhouse celebrated its Centenary in 1998. | The layout of Royal Lytham & St Annes has remained faithful to the original created by the Club's first Professional, George Lowe, over a century ago. The only significant changes were made in 1919 when the club asked Harry Colt, the pre-eminent Course Designer of the time to make recommendations for improvement. Over the next four years he repositioned some of the Greens and Tees added numerous bunkers and lengthened the course. It is not a conventionally beautiful golf course, surrounded as it is by suburban housing and flanked by a railway line, but it has a charm all of its own. It is a Links Course that is a long way from the sea yet close enough for the sea breeze to have an effect on one's game and was aptly described by Bernard Darwin, the leading golf writer of the thirties, as 'a beast of a Course, but a just beast'. He went on to say that 'no one could fail to be impressed by its difficulties, which sets a golfer just about as ruthless as an examination as any Course of my acquaintance'. |

108 | 2018-07-19 09:00:47 | The Olympic Club - Lake | Established on May 6, 1860, The Olympic Club enjoys the distinction of being America’s oldest athletic club. Long a west coast powerhouse in amateur sports, the Club is the home of many local, regional, national and international champions. | By 1922, the Club had acquired enough acreage to replace the original golf course with two 18-hole golf courses. Willie Watson and course superintendent Sam Whiting designed the first Lake and Ocean courses in 1924. Unfortunately, storm damage led Sam Whiting to redesign both courses again in 1927. The Lake Course remains true to the 1927 design with minimal renovations in the intervening years. Prior to the 1955 U.S. Open, the Club brought the USGA’s official course architect, Robert Trent Jones, Sr., to toughen the Lake Course for competition. Most recently, the Club completed the Lake Course Greens Replacement project. Conversion from poa annua to bent-grass greens was the primary objective of the project, but the crew also rebuilt and renovated greens. The new 8th hole, the first routing change to the course since 1927, was sculpted into the surrounding hillside with views of the clubhouse. It will play as a 200-yard par 3. Additional alterations are still under construction for the 2012 U.S. Open Championship. |

113 | 2018-07-19 09:01:48 | Cog Hill Golf & Country Club - Course 4- Dubsdread | Known as the "Patriarch of Public Golf," Joe Jemsek aspired to provide a country club experience and amenities to all golfers. Course No. 4-DUBSDREAD was the fulfillment of that dream. | Famed architect Dick Wilson and his associate Joe Lee were selected to create Joe's vision. Their challenge was to create a public layout that would test the world's greatest golfers. In short, they succeeded. Nationally ranked since its opening in 1964, Course No. 4 was given the nickname "DUBSDREAD." The name DUBSDREAD is derived from the idea that a "dub" or poor golfer should beware and served as a warning of the challenges forthcoming. True to its name, this natural-style championship course places a high demand on shot making ability ability by providing tight landing areas combined with heavily bunkered, large undulating greens. In light of recent advances in golf club technology and agronomy, the "Open Doctor" Rees Jones was brought in to re-establish the original intent and strategy of DUBSDREAD'S design |

115 | 2018-07-19 09:02:09 | Inverness Club | Inverness Club is a nationally recognized private club, building on a rich heritage to provide its members and guests a memorable experience. | The voice of Inverness began as a mere whisper in the wee hours of the 20th Century. In 1903, several of Toledo’s leading citizens financed the original land purchase, constructed the first clubhouse, and built a nine-hole golf course which was eventually expanded to eighteen holes. In the autumn of 1916, the Inverness Board of Directors hired famed Scottish golf course architect Donald Ross, to design a championship course in Toledo by the end of the year. His blueprints were on display in the Club’s grillroom and in two years course construction was completed. Following the 1920 U.S. Open, the greens on 2, 13, 16 and 17 were raised and a number of holes were lengthened. In 1978, George and Tom Fazio further refined the architecture, creating new holes at 3, 5, 6, and 8. Donald Ross’ signature is on close to four hundred courses in the United States, Canada, and Cuba. Though he designed hundreds of courses, he discussed only seven of them in his book, Golf Has Never Failed Me. Inverness is one of them. In the fall of 1999, architect Arthur Hills again enhanced Inverness, lengthening the course to its current 7,255 yards. From its original construction in 1903 through its periodic refurbishing, Inverness has evolved and matured, becoming even more scenic, subtle, balanced, and demanding. National tournaments held at Inverness Club through the years have helped write golf’s history book. Browsing through our website provides just a glimpse of all the excitement and pride that continues to be felt at Inverness Club today. |

Having hosted Opens, PGA and Amateur Championships and Walker and Curtis Cups, it has been witness to more golfing history than any other in England. It was also the setting, in the guise of Royal St Mark’s, of golf’s most famous fictional match, the contest between James Bond and Goldfinger. Designed by William Laidlaw Purves in 1887, it has constantly evolved to pose a tough test for championship and more modest players alike. In common with many links, it is characterised by humps and swales, dunes and wild rough, fast-running fairways and deep bunkers. Demanding carries put a premium on strong driving, but even with such uncompromising terrain properly flighted and directed shots will always find their target and leave a clear line to the green. |

Its championship design requires an attractive... | In designing what has become its present-day course, Aronimink entrusted only the best- Scottish pro Donald Ross. One of America's foremost golf architects, Ross pledged to create a course that could not be equaled. That course opened at Aronimink Golf Club in 1928. Since that time, the Aronimink team has continued to uphold the distinction of Ross's design and maintain the integrity of the course's original challenge. At first, the picturesque evergreens and hardwoods that line the fairways may be deceiving - but Aronimink's course is far from an easy stroll in the woods. Its championship design requires an attractive balance of long-and short-hole skills as well as strategic play. Over 100 bunkers, slopes, valleys, and doglegs present a definite challenge for all playing abilities. Ross designed the Aronimink course to put even the best golfers to the "supreme test" - that of exceptional long-iron play. The Ross challenge is evident from the very first hole, which presents a sharp drop right off the tee, followed by a 250-yard uphill climb to the green. The course also requires endurance - especially on the 16th hole with its 545-yard,par-5 challenge. And, to assure players are at the top of their games, Aronimink is balanced with well-crafted shorter holes that make strategic excellence and accuracy essential. However, in classic Ross style, the ingenuity of the course's design opens it up to all levels of abilities-presenting a rewarding challenge to the most skilled professionals, while giving average golfers a course on which they can play with confidence. |

180 | 2018-07-19 09:03:29 | Pacific Dunes | Designed by Tom Doak, Pacific Dunes opened in 2001. It is remarkably different in character and shot making requirements than our other courses. Pacific Dunes doesn't feel like it was built as much as it was discovered. | The game of golf was born on rugged, wind-swept land like this. Where every hole, every hazard, and every shot is defined by nature's infinite presence. True links courses are rare, with only about 160 on the entire planet. At Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, you'll find five distinctly different courses built on a beautiful stretch of sand dunes perched 100 feet above the Pacific Ocean. Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes feature a dozen holes that run along the bluff overlooking 23 miles of sweeping, undisturbed shoreline. Bandon Trails begins on a massive dune, works its way through open meadows and upland forest, and then finishes in the dunes. Old Macdonald moves through dune to ocean revealing breathtaking views throughout. The courses here weren't built as much as discovered. Among the coastal forest, dunes and gorse, lie golf holes that yield fresh rewards each time they're played. Accommodations provide a refuge of relative seclusion. Chrome Lake Rooms offer double king and two-room lofts. Lily Pond Rooms offer two queen beds, while the Lodge offers single rooms and three suites, many with dramatic golf course views. Our Grove Cottages are designed specifically for a foursome of golfers, with four private rooms and a shared parlor and patio. The Inn at Bandon Dunes provides single king and double queen beds just a short walk from the Lodge. Located on the property are full service restaurants, lounges, golf shops, hot tub, sauna, exercise room and locker rooms. A 32-acre practice center allows you to hone every shot required at Bandon Dunes and features a one-acre practice putting green and bunker practice area. Bandon Dunes is 5 minutes from the seaside town of Bandon, just off Highway 101, and just 25 minutes from the Southwest Regional Airport in North Bend, served daily by flights from Portland and San Francisco. |

188 | 2018-07-19 09:03:42 | Victoria National Golf Club | Today, the visionary design of Tom Fazio is a truly unique golf course, capable of hosting major championships. Greens, tees & fairways are an emerald carpet of Bentgrass, the "Cadillac of Grasses," & roughs are a blend of four bluegrass varieties. | Today, the vision of Terry Friedman and the visionary design of Tom Fazio come together to create a truly world-class golf course, fully capable of hosting major championships. Greens, tees and fairways are an emerald carpet of Bentgrass, the "Cadillac of Grasses." Roughs are a blend of four bluegrass varieties, and all surrounding areas are maintained in their natural states. Victoria National was the first major course to install a SubAir in-ground vault system, providing all 18 greens and both practice greens with temperature and moisture control and CO2 evacuation. The irrigation system features integrated fertilization as well as a state-of-the-art Bio-Jet system that grows and injects microbes specially developed to control turf diseases. The entire agronomical operation at Victoria National is controlled by computers. A sensor in the ground measures soil temperature and a heat pump kicks in to blow warm air under the greens when the air temperature drops below 40 degrees. If the greens get too hot, the system cools them down and when Mother Nature drops rain, vacuum pumps suck out all the moisture down to the roots. The result is unprecedented quality, consistency and control-from the first tee to your final putt. |

The club was officially incorporated on December 31, and the original golf course was opened on July 29, 1911. It was a nine-hole course, and was designed by Willie Watson, a well-known course architect of the time. George Sargent, who won the 1909 U.S. Open and was later president of the PGA of America, was the head professional for a few years.[1] In 1919, the club decided to redesign the course. The new 18-hole course, which is largely the same today, was designed by Donald Ross and opened in 1921. Robert Trent Jones made some alterations in 1963, and Geoffrey Cornish renovated it in 1986. The course is consistently ranked Golf Digest's list of the 100 best courses in the United States (#44 in 2005, #62 in 2007), and #1 in Minnesota. The course is about 6,900 yards long, and is a par 72. The first major tournament held at Interlachen was the Western Open in 1914. In July 1930, the club was the site of the U.S. Open championship. Bobby Jones had already won the British Amateur and the British Open that year, and continued his run by winning at Interlachen by two strokes over Macdonald Smith. Jones completed his unprecedented Grand Slam by winning the U.S. Amateur later in the year. The club was scheduled to host the 1942 U.S. Open, but the event was cancelled after the outbreak of World War II.[1] The club also hosted the 1935 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, which was won by Glenna Collett Vare 3 & 2 over Patty Berg. Berg was a 17-year-old member of Interlachen, and was playing in her first national tournament. She went on to an illustrious amateur and professional career, and was a founding member of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA). The 2002 Solheim Cup was held at Interlachen, with the United States retaking the cup by a score of 15½ to... |

Sebonack features holes that offer panoramic views of Long Island’s Great Peconic Bay and Cold Spring Pond. The visual impact of the water vistas competes for the golfer’s eye with the rolling fairways, expansive bunkers and waste dunes, and undulating greens that present tricky swales and burrows. Meant to look as if manicured by time, Sebonack appears to have fashioned itself from the wild terrain. Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak, two designers with dramatically different styles, have used the natural contours and features of the land to create a unique look. The result is that Sebonack looks quite different from its illustrious neighbors and provides a strong golfing challenge for players of all calibers. |

The following 13 holes are cut through majestic pines with elevated greens and strategically placed bunkers and lakes to grab the errant shot. Hole names such as "Black Dog" and "Billy Bones" are hints for the unwary. Spyglass Hill Golf Course is rated one of the toughest courses in the world from the Championship tees, boasting a course rating of 75.5 and a slope rating of 144. 198 | 2018-07-19 09:04:14 | Peachtree Golf Club | Peachtree Golf Club was founded in 1947 by Grand Slam Champion and Atlanta native Bobby Jones. | The design collaboration by amateur star Bobby Jones and golf architect Robert Trent Jones (no relation) was meant to recapture the magic the former had experienced when he teamed with Alister Mackenzie in the design of Augusta National. But Trent was an even more forceful personality than the flamboyant Mackenzie, so Peachtree reflects far more of Trent's notions of golf than Bobby's, particularly in designing for future equipment advances. When it opened, Peachtree measured in excess of 7,200 yards, extremely long for that era. It boasted the longest set of tees in America (to provide flexibility on holes) and the country's largest greens (to spread out wear and tear). As it turns out, Trent was a visionary, and decades later others subsequently followed his lead. |

Unlike many links courses (such as those that host the Open), the greens are its primary defense. Like many links courses (such as those that host the Open), its other defenses are the wind, the fesque rough, the imaginative bunkering that highlights the terrain, and the lumpy, bumpy fairways. When the Maxwell/MacKenzie greens are combined with these other natural features, an unusually testing layout is the result, despite the scorecardshowing acourse that barely measures 6,500 yards. To appreciate the challenge of the course, the golfer needs to start with the greens. Fred Muller, the long time professional at Crystal Downs, has seen someone putt off every green at least twice. The pitch on greens like the 2nd or 11th isalmost staggeringas there is in excess of six feet (!) of fall from back to front. The contouring of greens like the 5th and 16th holes is frightening, especially whenone seesthe first puttslide into agreenside bunker. Collectively, the greens at Crystal Downs surely rival those at Oakmont as the most intimidating in golf. |

201 | 2018-07-19 09:04:28 | Prairie Dunes Country Club | Prairie Dunes is an American original and one of the most scenic courses anywhere. You could never mistake pictures of it for any other American course, although it is easily confused with some of the best of the British Isles. | Hutchinson, Kan., the center of the United States, is the last place anyone would expect to find a links style course with rolling hills reminiscent of the seaside courses in Scotland. Nestled five miles northeast of Hutchinson, Prairie Dunes is the hidden treasure of Kansas. Emerson Carey, founder of Carey Salt Company, was an avid golfer and had traveled the world with his family, playing top ranked courses in the early 1900s including Scotland in the 1920s. Carey and his four sons became a staple in the Hutchinson golf community, contributing to the development of several courses in the area. In 1935 the Carey family commissioned architectural genius Perry Maxwell (Southern Hills, Colonial Country Club, redesign of Pine Valley and Augusta National) to design a masterpiece. Thus, the idea of Prairie Dunes was born. Maxwell’s response to the 480 acre canvas for his masterpiece, “There are 118 holes here, and all I have to do is eliminate 100?. Thus, construction began on Prairie Dunes. The course was molded from the Kansas land using 18 horses and mules, Fresno scrapers and wheelbarrows. The only mechanized equipment used were Model T and Model A Fords used to bring the workers to the site. Greens and fairways came to life by teams dragging plows and scoops, while roots of native grass and weeds were removed by hand-one wheelbarrowful at a time. In true Kansas fashion, a tornado swept across the site, forcing men into a bunker for protection. Despite the elements, Prairie Dunes opened the first 9 holes on September 13, 1937. Twenty years later in 1957, The Dunes opened the second 9 holes, designed by Perry Maxwell’s son, Press. |

203 | 2018-07-19 09:04:42 | Southern Hills Country Club - Championship | Southern Hills Country Club was established in 1936 as a private country club. The land that is now Southern Hills Country Club was donated by oilman Waite Phillips. | When the stock market crashed, Mr. Phillips’ fortune was almost totally liquid; it was estimated to be approximately $50 million. He became Chairman of The First National Bank of Tulsa, and he was approached by Bill Warren and Cecil Canary to finance a new country club. They spoke of the need for a family-oriented club that would include a swimming pool, stable, horseback trails, polo field, skeet range, tennis courts, clubhouse and golf course. Golf was not as popular in those days and swimming pools were rare. Mr. Phillips immediately labeled their ideas as ridiculous, noting the more important financial demands of the day. However, he agreed to donate the land for the club if Mr. Warren and Mr. Canary could demonstrate there was a sufficient number of people interested in such a project. Mr. Phillips gave them two weeks to garner pledges from at least 150 Tulsans for $1,000 each, but he would not personally give them a nickel to finance the project. The money was raised and the Clubhouse was constructed in 1936. Perry Maxwell, who designed the Colonial and Prairie Dunes golf courses, was hired to design the Southern Hills golf course. |

Rich Harvest Farms is an experience all its own and the staff consistently provide world class service | Wetlands, mature trees and Illinois prairie grasses offer boundaries, definition and charm to the entire property. Jerry and Betty Rich’s dream began to develop when their amassed farms, a 1,820-acre showcase of nature and agriculture, gave way to one golf hole and a practice area. Then three holes. Then six. After interviewing five architects, Jerry discovered he could draw the plans himself – and did. He even hired a construction company that had never before built a golf course. Though influenced by Augusta and the encouragement of friends Bob Murphy and Sam Snead, Jerry also took inspiration from Dick Wilson’s Pine Tree in Florida. In 1987, Jerry began the development of Rich Harvest Farms and ten years later, all 18 holes were completed. It was rated 5th Best New Private Golf Course by Golf Digest in 1997 and three years later, made Golf Digest’s America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses. For many people that would be enough. For Jerry Rich, it was just the start. In 1998, with his life-long friend Don Springer, he established the Kids Golf Foundation of Illinois. By 2009, the Foundation had introduced over 150,000 Illinois children to the game of golf. Of all Jerry’s accomplishments, he hopes the Foundation will become his legacy. Rich Harvest Farms has been the site for the Foundation’s fundraisers, including the Bob Murphy Pro-Am and Chrysler All-Star-Shoot-Out, and was home to the 2009 Solheim Cup, where 120,000 patriotic spectators witnessed the U.S. team defeat Europe in the 11th staging of the matches. |

206 | 2018-07-19 09:05:00 | Milwaukee Country Club | According to its well produced centennial club history book entitled A Sense of Tradition by John Gurda, the original course comprised of play in a pasture, before evolving to nine holes in 1898. | In 1909, the club’s prospects for possessing good golf brightened considerably when members found today’s site within ten miles north of the downtown business district. The soil was sandy loam in spots with more than half of the 108 acres located high with nice movement over a river valley. Though the golf architecture work being done in the 1910’s was superior to that of the 1900’s, it was still a far cry short of what would be accomplished during the height of the Golden Age of architecture in the 1920’s. The head golf professional at Milwaukee, Alex Robertson, oversaw the construction of eighteen holes that included more of his ideas than those of Tom Benedelow, who had been called up from Chicago. Parallel holes abounded and Robertson’s eighteen holes felt cramped as they were crammed into the a section of today’s property that only features ten holes. Thus in 1924, another 77 acres were acquired including the yummy section where today’s fifth through eleventh holes reside and Walter Travis was brought in. One might think this would have been the final answer as Travis was a legend within the sport. While he excelled at building features, Travis’s routing skills betrayed him at Milwaukee and the resulting effort paled against his other architectural achievements. Based in New York, it is unclear how much time Travis spent on property. Whatever the reason, though Travis was the most accomplished architect to work at Milwaukee to date, his course actually existed the briefest period of time. The crème de le crème of Milwaukee society demanded something better. Golf became ensconced as an important part of life for the well-heeled of the 1920’s Midwest and numerous courses around greater Chicago captured the grandeur of the game far better than Milwaukee Country Club. A few final pieces to the puzzle came together. First, it was agreed to move the clubhouse somewhat lower and on the edge of the bluff, which opened up the possibility for the high spot of the... |

I am satisfied now that your number IV course is the equal of any golf course I have ever seen and I know of none that is superior, either in beauty or natural terrain." The North Course remains steadfastly faithful to Park's original design, with precious few changes over the decades other than deepened bunkers and additional length. Par for the North Course is 70 strokes played over 7,205 yards with a rating of 75.9 and a slope of 147. The North Course is routed over naturally rolling terrain, and makes liberal use of Butterfield Creek, which winds its way through seven holes, including twice on numbers 12 and 14. The North Course had been ranked continually by Golf Digest as one of America's "Top 100 Greatest Courses," and in 2011-12 enjoys the ranking of No. 62 among all golf courses - both classic and modern - in the United States of America. Fazio’s team blasted 130,000 cubic yards of rock from a site he termed “previously unworkable.” From the black tees at 7,122 yards, with a course rating of 74.8 and a slope of 145, Fazio has created a world-class challenge. 220 | 2018-07-19 09:05:49 | Sahalee Country Club- South/North | Sahalee was designed by noted golf course architect Ted Robinson with later renovations by Rees Jones. It has been consistently ranked in the top 100 courses in America by Golf Digest for over 30 years. | This all weather, year round course is characteristically Northwest with majestic Douglas fir, red cedar and hemlock trees lining its narrow fairways. Sahalee's 27-holes consist of three 9-hole courses of equal caliber (the North, South and East course), any two of which can be combined to a standard 18-hole course. This arrangement eliminates the need for call-ahead starting times and promotes greater freedom of play for all members. And, while some of golf's greatest have competed here in championship play, Sahalee caters to players of all ages and abilities. A wide variety of tee boxes on every hole accommodate different skill levels and afford everyone opportunities for success and continued challenge. |

221 | 2018-07-19 09:06:02 | Prince's Golf Club- Shore/Dunes | The Dunes and Shore loops make up the "Championship" course. The Himalayas is shorter but nonetheless, an enjoyable nine holes. Above all, a warm welcome awaits everyone, just as it did when Prince's GC first opened, one hundred years ago. | At the turn of the 19th century, it was decided that a new links should be built at Sandwich, nex door to Royal St. George's. The new Prince's Golf Club would welcome ladies, juniors and men. Charles Hutchings and Percy Lucas laid out the course on land donated by the Earl of Guildford. The 18-hole course, stretching out to almost 7,000 yards, opened for play in 1907. The military commandeered the course during both World Wars; it was virtually obliterated during the Second World War. However, in 1932, Prince's Golf Club proudly hosted its first and only Open Championship. "The Squire," Gene Sarazen, was the eventual winner. Sarazen continued his winning streak, becoming the first player to win all four majors. Sir Guy Campbell and John Morrison were commissioned to re-build Prince's after the devastation of the Second World War and, incredibly, they were able to save 17 of the original greens and incorporate them into the new 27-hold layout. They have created a classic "links and a half," with raised greens, rippled fairways, deep bunkers, and naturally, that famous links rough. |

222 | 2018-07-19 09:06:05 | Shoreacres | Shoreacres is located in Lake Bluff, Illinois, north of Chicago on Lake Michigan and was designed by Seth Raynor in 1919. | The defining characteristic of Shoreacres is the way Raynor routed the course around, over and through the ravines that dominate the landscape. The majority of holes play over a ravine on either the tee shot or the approach shot, sometimes both. The ravines are so prevalent that the scorecard features a local "Ravine Rule," allowing you relief under various penalty strokes if your ball ends up in one. |

228 | 2018-07-19 09:06:27 | The Minikahda Club | The USGA made its first stop to Minikahda back in 1916, as amateur Charles "Chick" Evans captured the U.S. Open. What was even more amazing, is that Evans carded a two-over-par 286 to defeat Jock Hutchison by two shots, using only seven clubs. | The Minikahda Club has a long and colorful history dating back to 1898, when the key founding fathers, C.T. Jaffray, a powerful and respected financial figure in Minneapolis, Martin Koon, William Edgar, Walter Tiffany and Harry Thayer started the club. The name Minikahda comes from the Sioux, a combination of two Indian words meaning "by the side of the water." The club logo in fact, depicts an Indian shield, similar to the original artifact framed in the clubhouse. By April of 1899 the full complement of 600 members (350 men and 250 women) was secured with a waiting list of 50. On July 15, 1899, Judge Koon, Club president, with suitable ceremony drove the first ball off the first tee. The original Membership fee was of $20 for men and $10 for women. The club's first golf professional, Willie Watson, who designed nearby Interlachen Country Club, along with Robert Foulis laid out the original nine-hole course, with the first shot being struck in the summer of 1899. Seven years later, the board approved plans to purchase additional property for an 18-hole layout. Foulis, Robert Taylor and Jaffray, who served on the Executive Committee of the United States Golf Association, created the new course, which opened in 1907. Renowned course architect Thomas Bendelow was brought in a year later to propose some minor adjustments to the course. |

230 | 2018-07-19 09:06:31 | Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club | Pine Needles offers character, warmth and comfort. Built in the 1950's and nestled among towering longleaf pines, our chalet style lodges provide exceptional comfort with recently renovated rooms and all of the luxuries of home. | In 2004, Pine Needles underwent an important restoration project. Under the watchful eye of Ross aficionado, John Fought, the greens were rebuilt, bunkers were dug out and fresh sand was installed. Contours and dimensions of greens were restored to their original forms as shown by a series of vintage aerial photos of the course, returning the course to its original glory. Following the restoration, the Pine Needles course measures more than 7,000 yards in length with some holes having been "stretched" to return the shot values that Donald Ross intended for this course. Fairway bunkers are now placed so that they serve as the kind of hazard that Ross intended for the tees. |

The wooded, gently rolling course, with amazing views of Lake Superior, is tough enough for low handicappers, yet is still eminently enjoyable for higher handicappers. The fairways are tree lined and bordered by a standard cut of rough. The fast greens vary in size, shape and undulation, and their speeds are determined by the seasonal weather conditions. Water hazards come into play often as features of at least seven holes. |

233 | 2018-07-19 09:06:56 | Rolling Green Golf Club | The typical course conditions are kept firm and fast through the green. The greens themselves protect par under normal circumstances by playing so that the ball lightly dents. | The 157 acres that comprise the land that the golf course is situated on is ideal for a parkland golf course. There are rolling hills and quite a lot of elevation changes on individual holes and throughout the course. Streams meander throughout the course, but mostly along the periphery of the holes serving to frame the holes. There are a number of hardwood trees such as oak, sycamore, maple, and ash throughout the course. There is a total of 130 feet of elevation change from the highest point near the 5th green to the lowest point where the creek exits the property on the 8th fairway. The typical course conditions are kept firm and fast through the green. The greens themselves protect par under normal circumstances by playing so that the ball lightly dents. It is hard to dial in approaches due to the maintenance meld and you really have to think about how the ball will react to the aerial game. The ground contours are complex on the approaches to the green. Except for some of the steeply uphill holes (4, 8, 11, 12, and 15) you can play the game along the ground, but local knowledge is very helpful. The only national tournament held at Rolling Green was the US Women’s Open in 1976. This bicentennial event was played at just over 6000 yards, the shortest Open in the modern era. Yet the course provided a stern test for the lady golfers. Sandra Palmer and JoAnne Carner, the previous year’s winner and runner-up, tied at plus eight. Carner shot a 76 but won the playoff the following day as Palmer shot a 78. The club has hosted many local tournaments, such as the Philadelphia Women’s Amateur, where such greats as Glenna Collett Vare, Dorothy Germain Porter, and Helen Sigel Wilson have participated. To this day, par has never been broken in any competition of 36 holes or more. |

235 | 2018-07-19 09:07:03 | Lehigh Country Club | Lehigh CC was designed by Master Golf Architect William Flynn back in 1927 and is one of the most beautiful and natural parkland courses in the world. | Situated along the Little Lehigh (stream) in the rolling hills of the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania, the course follows a routing that is pure Flynn genius. Eminently walkable, Lehigh features some very dramatic topography and changes of elevation of 105 feet from the lowest point on the golf course to the highest. The design has a collection of some of the best greensites Flynn ever conceived. With three sets of tees ranging from 5500 to 6600 yards and playing to a par 70, Lehigh offers plenty of challenge and enjoyment to all levels of golfers. There is not an indifferent hole on the course and each one presents its own unique challenges. As we all know, Flynn believed the ground game was integral to a great golf course and Lehigh is no exception. All but three of the greens are often best attacked using the contours of the approaches. The set of four par threes is second to none ranging in length from 177 yards to 226 yards from the back tees. Each is different and all are difficult but great fun to play. Lehigh’s two par fives are two of the best holes on the course. Both offer risk reward options and tempt the bold golfer to reach the green in two. The 11th is the more dramatic of the two with an 80 foot drop from an elevated fairway to the tiny green below tucked just beyond the Lehigh stream. The par fours offer great variety in shot options and design. The shortish ones in particular, are all a thrill to play and loaded with character. Huge specimen trees frame holes and fairways but rarely interfere with well-struck golf shots. It’s hard to find a much better walk anywhere! Sling your clubs over your shoulder or take a caddy and Lehigh is as good as parkland golf gets. |

237 | 2018-07-19 09:07:12 | Philadelphia Country Club - Spring Mill | Due to the rise in the popularity of Golf, the Club purchased land for an 18 hole Golf course in Gladwyne in 1926. The Club operated in two locations until 1957 when the Clubhouse on Spring Mill Road was completed. | "PCC", is one of the oldest country clubs in the country. In 1890, John C. Bullitt, an enthusiastic sportsman persuaded a small group of socially prominent Philadelphians to join him in organizing a country club for riding and driving. They purchased a sixty acre property in Bala adjoining Fairmount Park, and constructed a Polo field; hence the horse head logo. A nine-hole Golf course was completed on the site in 1892. The Spring Mill course was originally designed by architect William Flynn, and while many changes had taken place over the decades since it was originally designed, the Club recently returned to the previous design. In 1990, on the occasion of the Club’s Centennial Anniversary, an additional nine holes, designed by Tom Fazio, were dedicated as the Centennial Nine. In 1939, The U.S. Open was held on the Spring Mill course, with Byron Nelson winning in a nail-biting ending. In 2003, the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship took place at PCC, with Virada Nirapathpongporn the victor. Keeping in the Championship mode, the 2005 U.S. Amateur Championship was held here, as a co-host Club, for the early rounds. Today, the Club consists of approximately 1,000 Members and their families. Over half the Members reside in the surrounding neighborhoods of Gladwyne, Bryn Mawr, Villanova and Wayne; Philadelphia’s proverbial Main Line. 255 | 2018-07-19 09:08:05 | The Links at Spanish Bay | Spanish Bay recalls the original Scottish concept for the game of golf, established over five hundred years ago. | This was the intention of the design team, Robert Trent Jones Jr., Tom Watson and Sandy Tatum, in their creation of a true links golf course. Links is an old Scottish word for sandy wasteland, usually near the sea, with bristly grasses and ever prevailing wind. The Links at Spanish Bay are so authentic that even the Monterey coastline mirrors the rugged, natural beauty of Scotland. Here, the golf course provides you with the choice of using your regular shot or a low, running shot to play the firm turf while keeping the ball under the steady ocean breezes. The Links at Spanish Bay was also built with a deep respect for environmental preservation. To further continue this mission, we have designated "environmentally sensitive" areas. Drops are allowed outside of these areas, so we ask for your understanding and cooperation to help us preserve the native plants, birds and animals that make this course so special. |

287 | 2018-07-19 09:12:11 | Old Marsh Golf Club | In 1984, Old Marsh Partners purchased the Lewis Ranch, a 456-acre parcel of pristine marshes and stately upland pines tucked away in the heart of Palm Beach County. | Old Marsh is often called a “purist club”, created for those whose love of golf approaches passion. The historic traditions of the game are cherished and protected at this exclusive club. Laurie Auchterlonie, Honorary Professional to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland was appointed the first and only captain of Old Marsh. Mr. Auchterlonie and his family represent a modern link to this legendary sport. His father won the British Open Championship in 1893, his uncle won the U.S. Open in 1902, and he himself was a recognized international authority on handcrafted wooden clubs. The Auchterlonie family’s personal collection of antique clubs, some dating from the mid 1700’s, is on display in the Old Marsh Clubhouse. Laurie Auchterlonie’s respect for the game’s heritage remains a guiding principle at Old Marsh. In April 1998, Old Marsh proudly obtained the status of “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary”, which is a program of Audubon International. Members embrace the beautiful, natural setting that is the perfect backdrop for our golf course. Majestic pines, sawgrass vistas and pristine oak hammocks remain virtually undisturbed. Every element of the course is uniquely compatible with the natural environment. Its drainage system allows no irrigation water to be drained into the adjacent environmentally pure marshes or wetlands. Instead, all the water on the course is drained into canals or a series of retention lakes. This sensitivity to the unspoiled natural beauty of Old Marsh is symbolized by the presence of rare Florida sandhill cranes, whose trumpeting call can be heard echoing across the marshes, and whose nests stand along the fringes of the course. |

293 | 2018-07-19 09:12:54 | Purdue University - Ackerman-Allen Course | We are excited to be creating our own distinctive venue by renovating Purdue's historic Ackerman Hills Course under the creative magic of world-renowned golf course architect Pete Dye, who is donating his services. | Have you ever played Pinehurst No. 2 or Torrey Pines? If so, you know the special feeling of golfing at a distinctive venue. We are excited to be creating our own distinctive venue by renovating Purdue's historic Ackerman Hills Course under the creative magic of world-renowned golf course architect Pete Dye, who is donating his services. Ackerman Hills - formerly the Purdue South Course - originally was designed by Indiana Golf Hall of Famer Bill Diddle and built in 1934. It hosted the 1961 NCAA Men's Championships at which Purdue won the team title and Jack Nicklaus was the medalist. The course was modified in 1968 by Larry Packard to accommodate the expansion of the Tower Acres residential area. It was further developed from 1996 to 1998 as part of the opening of the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. Our objective now is to maintain the course's current parkland style and ensure that it is enjoyable for all to play with many of the same challenges that currently exist. At the same time, we want to add length in order to host championship-caliber events, while offering a variety of tee options to accommodate all skill levels. With the addition of two new holes adjacent to Cherry Lane and McCormick Road, we have expanded the course's footprint slightly to allow for better spacing and overall flow of play. Modern agronomic standards for turf varieties, drainage, irrigation, tee box areas and tree placement and replacement will be included in the renovation. The current severe sloping of some greens will be modified to accommodate the green speeds demanded and desired in today's game. The project also will address wetlands mitigation and storm-water runoff issues that impact the course as well as the campus footprint south of Stadium Avenue. The renovation was conceived by alumnus Jim Ackerman and Purdue director of golf Devon Brouse, and it is being made possible by major gifts from the Ackerman family as well as Samuel R. Allen (a Purdue golf team member in... |

296 | 2018-07-19 09:13:12 | Carmel Valley Ranch GC | As the only Pete Dye design in Northern California, the 18-hole, par-70 course has earned a reputation for its stunning views, friendly wildlife, tactical challenges and playability. | At the heart of Carmel Valley Ranch's 500 acres, winding through the core of the resort from the valley floor though the foothills and up to significant elevation, is the Carmel Valley Ranch Golf Course. As the only Pete Dye design in Northern California, the 18-hole, par-70 course has earned a reputation for its stunning views, friendly wildlife, tactical challenges and playability. Experience championship-level play at a course rated among the "Best US Golf Resorts" by Travel and Leisure's "World's Best" readers' survey. In a region known for spectacular golf experiences, Carmel Valley's unique microclimate bathes the course in more than 300 days of sunshine each year, and the location just a few miles from the coast means that temperatures are comfortable, offering ideal playing conditions year-round. Pete Dye designed this Monterey golf resort course to take advantage of dramatic elevation changes and verdant natural beauty, with the course's two signature holes, 11 and 13, both offering breathtaking drops into the valley. Other holes wind through vineyards, lavender fields, ponds and old-growth oak groves draped in Spanish moss—an ideal habitat for the deer and wild turkey that roam The Ranch. The course underwent a multi-million dollar enhancement, and now features a layout restored to Pete Dye's original design, T1 Bentgrass, enlarged greens and improved tee boxes. In the spring of 2013, our golf clubhouse went through a $1 million redesign. In addition to upgrading many of the indoor spaces with fireplaces, additional flat screen TVs, more relaxed furnishings and locker room upgrades, we also expanded many of the outdoor patio spaces; adding several cozy fire pits, a water feature and friendly service for a great casual dining option. |

297 | 2018-07-19 09:13:17 | Oak Tree National | The recent renovation of Oak Tree National has brought Pete Dye back to design what was originally regarded as the “finest inland golf course he has ever built.” | The golf course recently celebrated its 30th anniversary and has undergone numerous changes that will improve and maintain its championship quality. The course renovation included all new fairways, irrigation, tees, bunkers and practice facilities and minor changes to a few of the greens. Pete Dye toured the course and gave his blessing on the new construction that will in most cases return the golf course back to its original design. The fairways will consist of a new U-3 Bermuda grass, which is more cold-weather tolerant, providing green grass for approximately six more weeks a year than other common Bermuda grasses. It is the most popular turf used in Oklahoma. The new irrigation system provides greater coverage, allowing the maintenance crew to maintain the grass more efficiently. The tees have been leveled, new grass has been added and all of the bunker sand has been replaced with a more consistent grain of sand. The turf on the driving range and chipping green has been replaced with a few minor changes to the design of the practice areas. One of the goals of the construction project was to return the golf course back to its original design. This was accomplished by the addition of native grass areas and the re-design of a few holes. Holes #8, #13, and #18 have changed in that the greens were re-shaped to match the original design. The green on the par 3, 8th hole is once again guarded by a beach bunker. The green on the par 3, 13th hole has been reduced in size in order to live up to its name “postage stamp”, which refers to the phrase of landing your ball on a postage stamp. Also the green on the par 4, 18th hole has been changed back to its original shape and size. |
