300 | 2018-07-19 09:13:42 | Grand Harbor Golf & Beach Club - Harbor Course | For both the amateur golfer and the seasoned veteran, Grand Harbor Golf offers challenge and fulfillment in every aspect. Variety – The two courses are very different from each other, yet each is challenging in its own way. Members are never bored... | Many of the features of this tradition-inspired Grand Harbor golf course can be traced to the historic Scottish Links Style of tiered greens, undulating fairways and deep pot bunkers. A blend of exotic grasses in the roughs encourages the use of many clubs and the play of just as many shots. Adding an old-world flavor to the “look” of the course are mounds (reminiscent of the Scottish Dune Courses), wooden wall and giant landscaped sand bunkers. The classic sculpture of the Harbor Course complements the River Course creating a distinctive golfing experience for Grand Harbor Members. This golf experience not only represents, but pays homage to the traditions of America’s Grand Old Golf Clubs. |

307 | 2018-07-19 09:14:17 | Oakwood Country Club | Oakwood Country Club is a premier destination of the Quad Cities since 1923. In 1967 the Oakwwod CC introduced the Pete Dye-designed 18-hole golf course. | In 1923, a group of men organized a golf club, calling it “Fair Acres.” This nine-hole club was nestled among the giant oaks of South Moline Township. In a span of six years the club grew to almost two hundred members. At the 1929 annual meeting, it was decided to incorporate under the name “Oakwood Country Club.” The club remained at this location for many years, until it became imminent that Interstate 74 was to be built directly through the property. Land was purchased in Henry County in 1962, and construction of the Pete Dye design, 18-hole golf course began in June of 1965. Play began on the course on May 21, 1967. The course featured tough par 4s, reachable par 5s, and green designs that would test your short game. The clubhouse was completed September 1, 1968. Significant changes were made to the course in the late 1970s, when the club began its 24-year run hosting PGA Tour events, which included the Quad City Open, the Hardee’s Golf Classic, the Quad City Classic, and the John Deere Classic. The tees were moved further back, bunkers were added, and the driving range leveled to make it the finest practice facility in the Quad Cities. Today, improvements continue. Greens were re-seeded with A-4 bent grass in 2001 and the fairways were re-seeded with Memorial bent grass in 2008. The clubhouse was renovated in 2009, featuring an expanded horseshoe bar area, casual and formal dining areas, and a beautiful large patio area overlooking the 18th green. The result is a golf course that is notable for its natural beauty, and it continues to receive applause for its playing characteristics. The dreams and ambition of a few young men many years ago have helped shape the present day Oakwood Country Club into a premier club in the Quad Cities. |

311 | 2018-07-19 09:15:39 | Purdue University - Ackerman-Allen Course | We are excited to be creating our own distinctive venue by renovating Purdue's historic Ackerman Hills Course under the creative magic of world-renowned golf course architect Pete Dye, who is donating his services. | Have you ever played Pinehurst No. 2 or Torrey Pines? If so, you know the special feeling of golfing at a distinctive venue. We are excited to be creating our own distinctive venue by renovating Purdue's historic Ackerman Hills Course under the creative magic of world-renowned golf course architect Pete Dye, who is donating his services. Ackerman Hills - formerly the Purdue South Course - originally was designed by Indiana Golf Hall of Famer Bill Diddle and built in 1934. It hosted the 1961 NCAA Men's Championships at which Purdue won the team title and Jack Nicklaus was the medalist. The course was modified in 1968 by Larry Packard to accommodate the expansion of the Tower Acres residential area. It was further developed from 1996 to 1998 as part of the opening of the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. Our objective now is to maintain the course's current parkland style and ensure that it is enjoyable for all to play with many of the same challenges that currently exist. At the same time, we want to add length in order to host championship-caliber events, while offering a variety of tee options to accommodate all skill levels. With the addition of two new holes adjacent to Cherry Lane and McCormick Road, we have expanded the course's footprint slightly to allow for better spacing and overall flow of play. Modern agronomic standards for turf varieties, drainage, irrigation, tee box areas and tree placement and replacement will be included in the renovation. The current severe sloping of some greens will be modified to accommodate the green speeds demanded and desired in today's game. The project also will address wetlands mitigation and storm-water runoff issues that impact the course as well as the campus footprint south of Stadium Avenue. The renovation was conceived by alumnus Jim Ackerman and Purdue director of golf Devon Brouse, and it is being made possible by major gifts from the Ackerman family as well as Samuel R. 334 | 2018-07-19 09:17:51 | Fort Golf Course, The | The course was redesigned by Pete Dye and Tim Liddy. In 1998, The Fort Golf Course was third under "Best Affordable New Public Courses" in Golf Digest. | During the Civil War, the Indianapolis Arsenal supplied munitions to federal troops. Located near the State House from 1861 to 1865, the War Department later moved the arsenal east of downtown to Woodruff Place. By 1901, the War Department planned to close the arsenal. In March of 1901, Lieutenant Colonel Russell B. Harrison came back to Indianapolis to bury his father, President Benjamin Harrison. Russell felt strongly that some military presence should remain in the city to honor the tradition the arsenal played in fighting slavery and maintaining the Union. On June 28, 1904 the War Department issued General Order No. 117 officially announcing the purchase of land for "military purposes...about nine miles north-easterly from Indianapolis." In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated Fort Benjamin Harrison, in honor of our 23rd President and city resident. The post represents the first effort to create a "national" army out of a collection of state militias. The post served multiple roles as troop reception center, classroom, and soldier support facility during all major military conflicts from WWI to Desert Storm. The park includes the Camp Glenn Historic District which housed the Citizens Military Training Camps from 1935 to 1940, and hundreds of prisoners of war in 1944-1945. Rumored shutdown of Fort Benjamin Harrison Military Reservation became reality in 1991 through the Base Realignment and Closure process. In 1995 the U.S. Department of the Interior approved the State of Indiana's request to convert 1700 of the 2500-acre post into a state park and nature preserve. This decision led to The Fort Golf Course. The course was redesigned by Pete Dye and Tim Liddy. In 1998, The Fort Golf Course was third under "Best Affordable New Public Courses" in Golf Digest. Today The Fort is considered one of Indiana's best public golf courses and we look forward to seeing you here. |

340 | 2018-07-19 09:18:42 | Oak Tree Country Club - East | Oak Tree Country Club, located just outside Oklahoma City in Edmond, provides a serene setting where Members can spend quality time with friends and family and enjoy 36 holes of championship golf, tennis, swimming, family activities and more. | The East Course at Oak Tree Country Club is the championship test, far more exacting in its demands than the roomier West Course. The watery final stretch - the half-dozen holes heading toward the clubhouse - showcases the ferocity of the course. The East Course continues to serve as host venue for the highly-regarded Oklahoma Open, traditionally one of the most sought-after state titles in the land. Stalwarts like Bob Tway, Gil Morgan, David Edwards, Todd Hamilton and Lucas Glover are among the champions who have been crowned. The East Course is a tough slog from the outset. Forget the tips at nearly 7,100 yards; even from the 6,400 -yard middle markers, the half-dozen front-side par-4s average 410 yards. It's a bunker-strewn landscape, humps and hollows wreaking havoc with shots drifting from the short grass. It's a stiff enough challenge, but merely a preamble to the watery finish. Four of the final six, including a pair of distinctive par-3s are completely menaced by water1. The East Course's signature hole is #16, a 455-yard, par-4, with a water hazard down the entire left side of the fairway and requiring an approach shot to a deep green. The golf course plays to a par of 70, with a slope of 143 and course rating of 77.1 from the championship tees. |

346 | 2018-07-19 09:19:44 | Pinehurst No. 1 | Wild drives or a sloppy short game can make for a long day. As with any course bearing Ross's name, it is ultimately very playable without losing its challenge - and a favorite for a great starting round. | It all started here. When Pinehurst No. 1 welcomed players in 1898, golf aficionados flocked from the North to enjoy a winter round (early visitors included John D. Rockefeller and President William McKinley). After English golf legend Harry Vardon conducted a series of golf demonstrations at No. 1 in 1900, Pinehurst was on its way to being on the world golf map. Dr. Leroy Culver built the first nine holes and John Dunn Tucker added the next nine, but it is clearly Donald Ross’s touch that you feel on Pinehurst’s first golf course. After his initial efforts reworking the back nine, he implemented changes on the front, and made further revisions in 1913, 1937, 1940 and finally in 1946, shortly before his death. The simple yet strategic philosophy that informed Ross’s later design work is very much in evidence on No. 1, which is all the more remarkable when you consider that this was for all intents and purposes his first design. Recalling his Scottish heritage, Ross made liberal use of bunkers, both across the fairway and around the green. Don’t let the short 6,089-yard par 70 fool you; wild drives or a sloppy short game can make for a long day. No. 1 was a great start for Pinehurst, and it’s a great start for your visit. |

354 | 2018-07-19 09:21:03 | Timuquana Country Club | The services of Donald Ross, the country's most famous golf architect, were obtained to work with the original Green Committee composed of J. H. Tucker, Jr. and A. C. Ulmer, in designing an 18-hole course through the wilderness of forest and scrub. | Soon after completion of the course, Knowlton G. "Snake" Ames and C. E. Van Vleck donated an additional 65 traps to enhance the challenge of the fairways. Later, the Club engaged Robert Trent Jones, noted golf architect, to provide it with a long-range plan for continued improvement, much of which was implemented in the late 1950s. Beginning in early May, 2011 the entire golf course was re-grassed, bunkers sand replaced, extensive tree work and understory clearing accomplished, and overall drainage improved. The fairways and tees were sprigged with the new and lush Celebration Bermuda, and the green surrounds were sodded with Tift Grand, a tight, dense hybrid that can be maintained at low heights to enhance chipping options. The greens were sprigged with Tifeagle, resulting in firm fast putting surfaces. The course re-opened for play on October 13 to rave reviews. |

356 | 2018-07-19 09:21:11 | Sunnybrook Golf Club | Incorporated in 1914, Sunnybrook was organized by six "crusaders" who defected from the Philadelphia Cricket Club in 1913. | A beautiful 135-acre site was found – the old William Disston farm, which was purchased in December 1954. The new course was designed by William Gordon and his son David. Earlier in his career, William had supervised course construction for Willie Parks, Jr. and Donald Ross. He started his own company shortly after Ross’s death and developed a national reputation with work such as Saucon Valley’s famed Grace Course. In 2000 and 2001 the golf course received an architectural upgrade, under the direction of the nationally recognized design team of Hurdzan and Fry. A new modern clubhouse was opened February 15, 1956. The course was first played June 16, 1956. In August 1989 Sunnybrook acquired some additional peripheral acreage abutting the golf course in order to protect the integrity of the course. On September 30, 2001 an additional 33 acres of land was acquired extending the southern boundary of the Club. This acquisition was accomplished in cooperation with the Montgomery County Lands Trust and the Preservation Alliance of Philadelphia and provides a permanent open space conservation easement on the property. Over the years, Sunnybrook has hosted the United States Golf Association Senior Men’s Amateur Championship (1971) and the USGA Ladies Amateur Championship (1978) as well as a number of local and state tournaments. Sunnybrook’s own annual Silver Putter Tournament is, of course, one of the area’s most famous tournaments. Acknowledged to be one of the hardest courses in the area, Sunnybrook continues to test the mettle of its members and to afford them the privileges of a small club. |

370 | 2018-07-19 09:22:56 | Pinehurst No. |

372 | 2018-07-19 09:23:04 | Pinehurst No. 3 | Ben Crenshaw said it best in the 1970's, when No. 3 made an impression. "I just don't think people understand how good those holes are. They're filled with interest. They're shorter, but there's plenty of character to them." | This classic Donald Ross design (circa 1910) is the shortest course at Pinehurst at just 5,862 yards. But don’t let its modest distance fool you. Tiny elevated greens – averaging just 4,500 square feet each – demand precision, the kind of delicate approaches that will surely come in handy as you gear up for No. 2. A combination of longer par-3s and shorter par-4s provide ample opportunities to polish your long and middle-iron play. Accuracy and distance control also come into play on a number of well-conceived doglegs. |

375 | 2018-07-19 09:23:37 | Allegheny Country Club | A winding mile above the town of Sewickley, the first 18-hole golf course in Western Pennsylvania can be found. | The site, of course, is Allegheny Country Club, a turn-of-the-century collection of rambling buildings dedicated to the leisure and pursuit of various sports. Overlooking the golf course and tennis courts sits a sparkling white grand old dowager queen accented with touches of green known as the Clubhouse. After World War I, Allegheny became the scene for several golf and tennis tournaments, such as the international Davis Cup Matches and the U.S. Women’s Amateur Golf Tournament in the fifties. In 1990, the U.S. Women’s Mid-Am Championship was held at Allegheny as was the 40th USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship in 2001 Allegheny Country Club had its origin in 1895, but not at its present location. At California and Brighton Avenues on Pittsburgh’s North Side, the first site of the club, a 6-hole golf course as well as tennis courts and a clubhouse were constructed. The Club proved so popular, however, that it soon outgrew this facility. A new 150 acre site off Blackburn Road, then known as the Dairy Farm or McKean Tract, was purchased. The land was cleared and the clubhouse, designed by William Ross Proctor, was erected. A golf course, tennis courts, and a road were constructed and the property generally improved. In May 1902, the New Allegheny Country Club opened. The golf course has changed quite a bit since it was designed by Donald Ross, the famous golf course architect. According to reliable information, there are thirty-two abandoned greens on the property. In 1945 the first seven holes of the back nine were completely remodeled. Presently, an exciting master plan for the golf course, developed by talented golf course architect, Gil Hanse, is well-underway. The plan is dedicated to restoring Donald Ross’ classic design. |

378 | 2018-07-19 09:23:43 | Broadmoor Golf Club - East Course | The Broadmoor's East Course is known for its wide, tree-lined fairways and expansive greens. With its challenging terrain and amazing mountain vistas, The East Course is ranked among the best golf courses in the country. | Since the large trees can alter your shots and the putting greens difficult to read, the best tip we can offer for those taking on this open course is to remember that putts break away from the mountains. Spencer Penrose contacted legendary golf course architect Donald Ross in 1916 to design an 18-hole golf course for the magnificent property he was dreaming up. When completed in 1918, The Broadmoor's East Course was the highest golf course in the United States at 6,400 feet in elevation and Ross declared it his 'best work'. The East Course is now a combination of the original Donald Ross design mixed with holes designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. in 1952. The East Course has been home to many major tournaments, including the 1959 U.S. Amateur (which was Jack Nicklaus' first major win), the 1964 U.S. Amateur, and the 1995 U.S. Women's Open, which was Annika Sorenstam's first major title. Most recently, the famous course served as the host to the 2008 U.S. Senior Open and the 2011 U. S. Women's Open Championship. |

390 | 2018-07-19 09:26:32 | Country Club of Buffalo | The Country Club of Buffalo has been an important part of the history of Buffalo, and its members have provided civic and business leadership throughout the community. | Six of the holes – 5, 6, 7, 11, 12 and 13 – incorporate the unique beauty of the limestone. Holes 13, 17 and 18 are on the lower level below the escarpment. This arrangement actually provides the Country Club of Buffalo with two signature holes – the sixth, a par three located in the midst of an old quarry that in years past provided stone for many construction projects, and the 18th, which sits below a massive natural rock garden, with beautiful plantings leading up to the clubhouse. The 1926 Donald Ross design has been preserved, while improvements were made by such notables as Robert Trent Jones in 1952-54, Geoffrey St. John Cornish in 1965 and 1983, and William Craig Schreiner in 1994-96. The course was first honored by Golfweek Magazine in 2004. The publication included the Country Club of Buffalo in the list of the Top 100 Classic Golf Courses in America (courses constructed before 1960). |

392 | 2018-07-19 09:26:55 | Calumet Country Club | Established in 1901, Calumet Country Club’s 18-hole golf course was designed by Donald Ross. It has a long history of championship golf dating back to 1945 and the Chicago Victory Open. | At par 71 and 6589 yards from the championship tees, Calumet is a challenge for golfers of all skill levels. We feature four sets of tees – blue (championship), white (men), red (ladies) and silver (senior) – in order to provide each golfer the opportunity to beat par. With five par three holes, Calumet seems to offer many opportunities to make birdie. However, our lightning fast greens have a tradition of challenging every golfer to make par! As you make your way around the fairways, you will encounter strategically placed bunkers, water that will come into play, and narrow tree lined fairways. The scorecard link below will give you hole by hole information, but just remember, looks can be deceiving and many of our guests believe Calumet plays much longer than it appears! |

399 | 2018-07-19 09:27:49 | Longmeadow Country Club | Established in 1922, Longmeadow Country Club is one of the most prestigious and oldest clubs in western Massachusetts. LCC boasts an 18-hole, Donald Ross championship golf course that is nationally renowned. | In 1636, for "4 fathoms of wampum, 4 coates, 4 hatchets, 4 howes, and 4 knives", Massachusetts Bay Colony Treasurer William Pynchon purchased the Native American Agawam Plantation on the east bank of the Connecticut River. Soon renamed Springfield for Pynchon's home in England, an important part of the arrangement included communal grazing grounds known by the Agawams as Masacksic or "ye long meddowe". Nearly three hundred years later, it was a renowned Scot, Donald Ross of Dornoch who would transform a special corner of that purchase into the classic woodland golf course, Longmeadow Country Club. The Club was organized in 1922 when it assembled several parcels of land and engaged Ross. Traversing subtle and, at times, dramatic terrain, the architect's routing calls for the judicious use of both power and finesse. His knowledge of the game combined with unique horse drawn shapers produced the complex aprons and putting surfaces that were the crowning glory of a Ross creation. The course was completed in 1924 followed by the clubhouse in 1926 when Architecture magazine featured Longmeadow including the landscape architecture of Frederick Law Olmsted. Racquet sports and aquatics have since rounded out the Club's sporting facilities. In 1927, Longmeadow hired its first professional, J. Victor East of Australia. A world renowned club maker and teacher who counted the Prince of Wales as a student, East's presence completed the founders' vision of a golfing club. By 1932, as the first head of nearby A.G. Spalding's Custom Built Department, East was working secretly with icon Robert Tyre Jones and founding member Milton Reach to produce the country's first matched set of flanged soled irons with steel shafts, technological breakthroughs that helped sustain Spalding through the Great Depression and ushered in a remarkable parade of players who used Longmeadow as a proving ground for the company's equipment. |

401 | 2018-07-19 09:28:03 | Green Oaks Country Club | Pittsburgh’s Hidden Gem is nestled in the hills above Verona overlooking the Allegheny River, quietly situated in the small community of Rosedale. | Originally established in 1904, the golf course comprised of six holes built along the Allegheny River at Logan’s Ferry, Plum Township. Frequent floods made the site unplayable most of the time, and it became necessary to relocate to a new site. It was then that 50 acres was purchased adjoining the old Wilkinsburg Verona street car line and a 9-hole course was opened. An old house belonging to the McMillan family was used for the purpose of storing equipment and the house still remains across the street from Green Oaks Country Club to the present day. In 1907 a new colonial style clubhouse was completed and later land was purchased to extend the club’s grounds to the Allegheny River to make room for an 18-hole course. The current clubhouse at Green Oaks Country Club was constructed after a fire in December of 1950 and was completed in 1954. |

411 | 2018-07-19 09:29:55 | Sara Bay Country Club | Founded in 1926, Sara Bay Country Club is one of the most distinguished and prestigious golf clubs in Florida. The facilities are for the exclusive use of our members and their guests. | The course was designed in 1925 by the “dean of golf course architects”, Donald Ross, on a choice piece of land near Sarasota Bay that included undulating terrain, native trees, and a meandering creek. Ross is credited with approximately 400 designs throughout the world, and upon completion of this layout, Ross stated that he had accomplished as much in this design as any of his master works in America and Europe. The greens at Sara Bay Country Club, more than any other of his courses, mirror his famous design at Pinehurst No. 2. Brian Silva, a leading expert on Ross designs, confirmed this similarity when he undertook the restoration of the course in 1991. In the fall of 2006, Silva completed an extensive renovation, the scope of which included all new tee complexes, rebuilding of all bunkers, improved drainage, re-grassing of fairways, and conversion of putting surfaces to TifEagle Bermuda. Throughout every facet of this project, extraordinary care was taken to preserve tountry Clubhe integrity of the original Ross design. Forty years after Tommy Armour left as head professional of Sara Bay Country Club, he reminisced about his time at the club in an interview with Golf Magazine…"it was glorious, for I played golf everyday with Bobby Jones, and we picked up pointers from one another…it helped both our games." Now, eighty years after these legendary golfers walked the tree-lined fairways of this venerable club, Sara Bay Country Club remains one of the most distinguished and well manicured in the state. |

412 | 2018-07-19 09:30:03 | Pinehurst No. 6 | Tom and George Fazio began work on Pinehurst No. 6 in 1975. In 2005, Tom returned to carve new bunkers, soften angles and seed faster greens. | No. 6 rests a few miles from the center of Pinehurst, and is also a departure from the first five courses in design and temperament. It’s the first Pinehurst effort by Tom Fazio, who can claim more courses ranked among the top 100 in the U.S. than any other architect. Tom began work on No. 6 in 1975 with his uncle George, a famed designer in his own right. The result was a more rugged, undulating track that demands bigger drives and more aggressive approaches. Tom returned in 2005 to carve new bunkers, soften angles and seed faster greens. The addition of native wiregrass throughout the course gives it a distinctive Pinehurst feel. Between the water, bunkers, wetlands and woods, there are plenty of perils on this par-71 track. The back nine is among Pinehurst’s most challenging halves. |
